It can reasonably be asserted that Jeffries used cocaine to deal with hand injuries, though he was of course within his rights.
The question should be, were the use of these substances illegal at the time? If they weren't illegal why bring it up except to point fingers? I am sure coke was also used when it was bought over the counter. Alcohol was used in the bareknuckle days and after. Nobody seemed to be making a stink about it at that time, so why do it now?
Well, for example, if it could be shown that James Corbett was a much better fighter because of drugs he was using, this makes it less likely that he would beat Joe Louis assuming he was in a fight where he wasn't allowed to use drugs to enhanced his performance. Because most people are anti-drugs in sports, most people would tend to take that position quite naturally.
The decade that was the 1980s, does not lead me to believe that cocaine was a magic performance enhancing drug!
Why ? Is there drugs testing in head-to-head scenarios? Brandy might have made Tunney better. In the right doses. I don't know.
No. I think you understand what i mean, but if you don't it's not that important. Nah. It made him vomit in the corner.
I think you mean we should imagine PED-free fighters for imaginary head-to-heads. Which, imo, would be a mistake. Since historically, (and even now in the 'drug-tested' era) we don't know who has been using what. Ah, yes, Tunney was famously a teetotal-celibate type, if i remember correctly. Brandy is probably not the best drink to start off on anyway, and in the middle of a boxing match is probably not the best time to start !
No, i explicitly do not believe that. What I was saying to Janitor was that this is probably why this is important to people - i didn't say that I felt that way.
Ok, I see. You're probably right too. I thought ... if I thought about it at all ... perhaps it was important to some people because it's more sh!t to throw at Jack Dempsey (or any other target, albeit on a agenda-selective basis) ... and that may still be the case .... but what you said rings true, and I'll go with it. And ... you were right twice, it's probably not important. :good
