Was Dubois overrated by the British media?

Yes fans are too impressed by "belts" and "defences" without relevant context. None of Joshua's opponents on his initial winning streak (including Parker in 2018, whose own 'champion' credentials were woeful) had any legitimate claim to be taken seriously as a champion or anything close. We might say Klitschko came closest, because he was an ex-champion. He was very much an "ex" champion. He'd lost his title in a pathetic showing 17 months before and had beat 0 contenders or any boxer since that and was 41 years old.

These are all good fighters and AJ v Klitschko was a very good fight. But people need to be realistic when actually ranking the achievements.

I agree, Joshua would never have been called a "champion" if there were 1 or 2 quality fighters around holding the belts.

Still, Fury was way more overhyped for his Wilder win. So it's irrelevant.

Martin, Dubois and Wilder were paper champions, sure. AJ in some sense too, but he was unified title holder and the consensus was starting to form around him as the new lineal champ in 2018. But then Fury came back, so the stronger claim reverted back to Tyson. Still, AJ was the best heavyweight in the world between April 2017 and June 2019. Not many fighters can say it about themselves.

AJ's resume is clearly better than Joyce's. It's also deeper than Fury's. Plus he did better against common opponents than Fury if we're going by that logic.

I think a lot of that was because the HW division at the time AJ came up was pretty dead commercially and there was a real need for a talented entertaining young big star to come along and catch fire.

Dubois came along when the division was relatively healthy with several big stars around. He also doesnt have the same level of mainstream marketability that Joshua had.

You're not wrong. Joshua was very marketable at a time when the division needed a marketable heavyweight (Fury was poorly promoted at the time,, his fight with Klitschko was a stinker, and he was unpopular with the British media because he said all the gayness in society was a sign of Satan etc. ) .
Eddie Hearn really pushed it well, and the opportunities were there.

The hype isn't a bad thing at all for boxing, it's generally a good thing - and i don't begrudge AJ his trophies and his hundreds of millions. But when it comes to soberly rating fighters, as hardcore fans, we do have to separate hype from reality.
