Other than Jimmy Young, past his prime but still crafty, Cooney is short on big wins .. Lyle was shot. He fought bravely against Holmes but he lost decisively .. almost never mentioned is his crushing first round KO of Eddie Gregg .. Gregg was a big, tough, very strong and hard hitting heavyweight still in his prime when Cooney stopped .. I did not know that Gregg was the first man to deck Tex Cobb, not Dee Collier ... see clip .. (5:45)

Eddie Gregg had already been stopped in 8 by James Broad before Cooney fought him.

So, no, that was not a great win.

Young is pretty clearly Cooney's best win.

It was Young. He should have kept the 'stache. Glory awaited with those follicles.

Cooney's resume is often criticized, but it's also important to remember that around 79-81 the heavyweight division itself was not that strong. Cooney beat Young, Lyle, Norton, also Dino Dennis who was just outside of the top 10, and future cruiserweight champ ST Gordon.
Cooney in my opinion could also have fought and beaten Earnie Shavers, Ossie Ocassio, Scott Ledoux, Leon Spinks, Alfredo Evangelista for example. I think it was a shame that he didn't get a shot at Mike Weaver who had the WBA belt at the time and had several losses, and then fought Holmes in a title unification match.

Shot or not, the win over Lyle was the most dramatic. Lyle must still be feeling the crippling effects of those body shots even in the afterlife.

I know this but Gregg was a huge puncher ns he fought back , even landing a few times on Gerry .. he came off a pretty brutal beatdown of Cobb .. he was a very tough guy and Cooney really rocked him ..

I think the Young win was more significant. He was fighting quite well and it would have been a nice fight without the cut. Cuts are part of it tho and he opened up a beauty.

Cobb was on the way down and probably partying harder than he was training at this stage. He's also Eddie's only notable win. No doubt he had some clout tho, he could hit for sure.

In a resume devoid of quality wins you could debate him against the likes of Dino, Chaplin, Brown etc.

Young, then Norton and Chaplin. Gregg was nice, but he was overrated from jump. Broad pounded him hard in that 84 NABF fight.

    Young.

Young was in shape and would real off 5 wins I believe after this fight capturing the Ring comeback of the year award.

Norton. Madison Square Garden facing a future HOF and doing what he did is just a good win even if Norton was at the end.

Then prob Gregg and Dino Denis.

Lyle was beyond shot. Watch the video when you can he can't even throw punches in the fight he just lurches into Cooney and eats punches. I think he threw 1-2 feeble body shots that was it

Cooney had ok wins against older guys, but he really was overrated. The guy was knocked out by Spinks, a light heavyweight in 5 rounds.

Gregg was not a name fighter at any time during any period. A nobody.

Yes but Cooney's record is so devoid of quality he's in the mix for Cooney's top few opponents.

Nobody asked what was Cooney's most dramatic win. The question was Eddie Gregg Cooney's best win. Maybe you should learn how to read better.

I wouldn't say Cooney is overrated. Because besides a few Irish guys liking him because he is Irish and they are Irish who else builds up Cooney? Cooney only beat washed up fighters. Which is funny since Rocky Marciano's whole career is based off him beating 4 old men and a bunch of mob controlled fighters. Yet I don't see many calling him overrated. At least Cooney was a heavyweight who actually fought Heavyweights.

Eddie Gregg wasn't great but he was a 6'5 guy who could bang.
