Was Ellis on the verge of stopping Shavers before getting KO'd himself?

It looks as if Earnie was going into his shell and about to suffer a Quarry-type stoppage until a possibly lucky punch dramatically ended it. A rematch would have been interesting. Hmmmm.
    Am I missing something?

He was either "going into his shell" or he was firing an uppercut with brutal KO force.
I can't see how he managed to do both.

Maybe I don't understand the term "going into his shell" though.

    It was no lucky punch.
