He looked better than in the fights leading up to Oscar. The main difference compared to the Tito fight was that he was stiffer due to his back. Oscar still beat a world class guy on that night.

And I have to say that Vargas also did very well in the fight with Mayorga. If he didn't get knocked down in both the first and eleventh rounds, that fight might've been a draw or even a win for Vargas.

He wasn't the fighter that beat Quartey and gave Trinidad a long night. After Tito Vargas started to suffer knockdowns like against Rivera that didn't happen on his way up.

I don't think Mayorga could have beaten Vargas at his best.

Not sure that the version who fought Oscar would’ve lost to Quartey w blond hair. He looked better for Oscar than against Rivera, like I alluded to. I do remember seeing Vargas struggle pretty badly in a fight as a prospect. I think a B+ fighter was his destiny, but his back really sent him downhill after the Oscar fight.

Maybe not, but Mayorga was not at his prime best at this point either.

They peaked around the same range pfp, but Mayorga wasn’t a true 154.

Fernando vargas was a bad man. It's too bad he had a bad back. I'm not sure if it was the peds that screwed it up, or if not operating on it caused concerns? Anyway he was always a stiff standing upright boxer who fought through the injuries.

Just to speculate, was he too muscled up for the Oscar de la Hoya fight? Was his back aggravated from this? Why was his family so concerned about his back? Vitali Klitschko had a back spur, it derailed his career. James Toney was suspected to be on roids for a few of his fights. Against a young heavyweight one night, he tore a biceps because he was too muscled up.

El Feroz was a warrior no doubt. Gave us tons of entertainment in his young career!

He was a good fighter, had a nice little run. He had good wins over some great fighters, he could of unified 154 before Winky did if he didn't run into Trinidad. He already beat Wright and Castillejo and I think he could of outpaced Reid in a hard fought UD to win all the major belts at 154 before all the WW's moved up. He was a staple of the last great years of HBO boxing in the 2000's and he has my respect, always tuned into his fights. Even his post Trinidad fights were classics, who would ever forget this moment?
