He looked a good fighter, wasnt doing anything wrong. If only he had world class power and chuvalos chin he would have made it. Ted drew with billy aired, a big liverpool heavyweight journeyman who john conteh stopped, Ted clearly lacked the punch to hurt bigger heavyweights.
Conteh stopped Aird on a cut eye.Aird was not a big heavyweight, 6foot tall and under 200lbs for all but one of his fights in his first 3 years as a pro,he lacked power, but was a reasonable boxer.
Did Joe Frazier have a little too much faith in 'The Smokin Joe Musical Revue'. Then it was changed, to 'Smokin Joe and the Knockouts'. Man was that embarrassing on 'The Ed Sullivan Show'
To me, George was molded to beat Frazer,,,,just like Tunney spent several years perfecting his style to beat Dempsey. I doubt George was really "scared" of Frazier, George was bigger, longer reach, and hit much harder.....and Frazier was going to be right there in front of him to be hit...in effect Frazier was just the heavy bag George hit every day in the gym. And as Joe admitted after the second fight, George hits a ton.
"CIANI: George, when you did fight for the heavyweight championship against Joe Frazier, you went into that fight as a three-to-one underdog. Did the perception that Joe was going to beat you, did that give you any extra motivation going into that fight? FOREMAN: Just getting in the ring with Joe Frazier was extra motivation because I had seen Joe Frazier. I had been matched thirty-seven times previously, and my manager would always tell me the other guy had a weak jaw, he didnt have this, and wed concentrate. But fighting Joe Frazier was the first time in the dressing room that he didnt even tell me anything because we both knew not to go there. This guy had no holes in his armor. This was a great fighter. This content is protected " http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=24792&more=1
No not at all. Frazier feared no man in the ring it's just that George was a bad style matchup for him is all. I'm a Foreman fan but admit that Joe wasn't prime after FOTC. Standing in front of George without knowing how to fight going back is usually not going to end pretty for George's opponents especially a prime George. Actually everyone that beat him could fight going back.
Howard Cosell did say it best, Howard screaming into the microphone; "It's target practice in there for George Foreman' I love 'Smokin Joe' but George simply had his number.
Frazier did try something different in the second fight, but when Foreman charged in with the heavy lumber the '76 Frazier wasn't capable of the kind of physical performance needed to match it. The '73 Frazier doing the '76 gameplan would be interesting, though.
George was pacing himself a lot more in their second fight. If he'd come in,all guns blazing like he did in Kingston,George would have stopped the shot, post Manilla Frazier in one round.
AGREE m8 :thumbsup Foreman was toying with Frazier And carrying him, ready to KILL at any second IMO. BUT Frazier wasnt shot - he old And shopworn - BUT still a top guy in 1976 me thinks.
I don't think that the '76 Frazier would have beaten Jimmy Young or even Ken Norton at this point. Manilla took a helluva a lot out of Ali,but even more out of Frazier.
