Was Hagler-Duran really that close?

a caveat first: whilst i watched the fight closely, i didn't keep a scorecard because i had read so much about the fight and just wanted to enjoy it.

now the analysis. i thought hagler won the vast majority of the first 11 rounds. while he wasn't dominating, he was cruising and putting the rounds in the bank with his greater workrate and accuracy. duran got a few rights in, but he wasn't particularly active and much of his work was being blocked by hagler. i can't remember any rounds between 1 and 11 that duran won, much less won clearly...well, maybe the 1st was duran's.

12 and 13 were also clearly duran, and these were the only rounds where he looked in control of the fight. we all know 14 and 15 belong to hagler.

after having finally watched the fight, i'm a little baffled at how close most people seem to see it including historians and the judges. your thoughts? just a matter of me keeping a scorecard?:D

yes, see i've seen "close but clear" used for this fight a lot. but i'm with you, it was simply "clear" for hagler.

Wasnt close really...I think people were amazed Duran was capable of being that competitive but that doesnt excuse the scores.

Hagler won in the 10 rounds to 5 region, at worst. This fight gets so much written about it, and mainly because of the incompetent scoring. Duran gets way too much credit - he boxes cautiously with tactics intended to get himself through the 15 rounds, and because of the crappy scoring he comes out with all the glory. He fought to survive, like he did in the rubber match with SRL.

I scored it 11 rounds to 4 for Hagler and I think I was generous in giving Duran 4 rounds. If Duran had won one of the last 2 rounds (I'm sure if this happened he would have won the fight on the scorecards, correct me if I'm wrong) we would have seen one of the biggest robberies of all-time in my opinion.

It wasn't that close, but you have to know that Duran beats up every man on the planet, and if he didn't, then was green/sick/unprepared/didn't want to win/had stomach cramps, or made a razor thin decision super close fight with a peak Hagler.

What happened in the 11th round? Monzon would never have done this. It certainly wasn't the Hagler of old.

I had Hagler behind after 12 until he turned up the heat late

    I had it Hagler 9-6. I think!

Might have to re-score it. Can't quite remember.

Duran was competitive and had his moments, but Hagler's title was never threatened.

However, Hagler and Judges don't mix. They seem to have something against him, whether he's challenger or champion.

Just watched again after quite a few years & i suprised myself by only having Hagler winning by a point, 145/144 but their was 4/5 rounds i scored even which depending how you say it could have gone too Hagler. But i definetly can see how the judges swayed 2 Duran on close rounds as he controlled ring centre & pressed the majority of exchanges, not with standing marvins work rate proberbly should have edged them, but at no time did he dominate the action so obviously the judges can't see this fight with the volume down & what with them only being human i can understand how they may have come down on Durans side in a lot of those even rounds + Duran fought a smart fight.

I noticed how Duran blocked alot of Haglers shots all bar the uppercuts inside & was more accurate himself with the counters he placed on Hagler.

I've shocked myself here as i watched this fight about 3 years ago & had marvin a 5 round winner but it just goes' to show that this was a really tough fight 2 accuratly score depending on what you call boxing or fighting ect.

After 12 i even had it 116/115 too Duran with 3 rounds level, all depends on what you are looking for:smoke 5/4/3

I've scored it a few times now & have always leaned towards Marvin but after just watching it again i can see how the judges where swayed 2 Duran rightly or wrongly, over 15 i went 145/144 too Hagler 6/5/4 but those 4 even rounds could go too Hagler, but he never looked like the dominant champion he was but i thought Duran fought a smart fight for his weight & age:smoke

I've also just finished watching MONTREAL again with my son, jeezus, Duran pissed it by a street, not even close:bart

it's good to know i'm not the only one who saw it as a clear hagler win. and i agree with the post that said hagler's title was never threatened, but historians and the scorecards seem to suggest it was even going into the 14th.
also agree that hagler and judges don't mix. i think they just expect him to dominate.
i might watch this fight again and score it this time.
