Excellent recap largely expressing my own sentiments. I've never understood how Marv could hold up his fists at a prefight conference, proclaim that "These are my judges. One is 'K' and the other is 'O,'" then not tear after Ray at the opening bell as he did Hearns.

In a close fight, such as this one,it quite often comes down to expectation levels. Leonard did n't have a prayer of surviving against Hagler, remember, let alone winning. Leonard was a lot better than anyone expected him to be,so much so,that people watching thought he was even better than he actually WAS ! Ray deserved the verdict......just. Hagler only had himself to blame, fighting the early rounds like he did. Marvin should have jumped on the rusty Ray,not giving him a chance to build up a rhythm.

    Agreed,

The one judges' scoring of 118-110 would have been ridiculous, regardless of who it was in favor of, but the other scores, reflected that those other two judges were at least watching the fight..

:yep Yeh now i recall that prefight conference, Mr "K" & Mr "O" something like that, jeezus where do you start to try & workout or explain Hagler's mentality before & during this fight juxtaposed with the petronellies input or lack off!!! I'am still so pissed off about this fight with Marvin acting the bitter spurned ***** & squealing robbery when he was the archetect of his own destruction.

I recall Marvin always acting the 2nd fiddle stooge whenever Leonard did color ring inteviews after Hagler fights with marvin always begging like a dog for the fight when Leonard interviewed him "Come-on ray come back & lets make the fight for all those millions of $$$$" please ray please ray come-on man!!! an undisputed champion debasing & prostituting himself by pandering to Leonards ego as chief decision maker & Leonard turning away from Marvin joking with other presenters & saying OK "Sign him up" as if Hagler was just an employee to be taken on as casual labour:fire

But once Marvin had got the Duran fight doubts & insecurities out of his system by annialating Hearns in 3 then he truly had his place atop boxings mt Olympus & he did'nt need Leonard & he held all the aces + the Kings/Queens & Jacks, he was rich & idolised & had ****-all to gain by allowing that treachourous **** Leonard a way back. Leonard knew how to find a way into Haglers head & exploit that inferiority complex/double shoulder chip that Hagler even now still insisted lugging around with him.

I recall leonard saying on TV i'am not coming back BUT!!! if Marvin calls me i'll think about it!!! NOT Leonard call Marvin!!! Marvin's got to call Leonard!!! All hagler had to say was Ray we'll hold a press conference to anounce the fight & when they did it was marvins chance to crush Leonard once & for all by saying the same speech that Leonard gave in 82 when he invited Marvin too in which we all thought would be to anounce the fight but Leonard used it to publicly Humiliate Hagler & make him his big dumb stupid dupe. Marvin should have said the same too leonard or go earn yer shot Ray & you had yer chance ever since 83.

I don't think anyone would have given a toss if the Hagler/Leonard fight of 87 never took place, it was'nt fare on the other contenders & Marvins best days were behind him, he could have retired with all the glory but he sold his soul to Leonard. Fancy giving away all your advantages in the nieve thought that it'll be an easy nights work. It was Leonard who needed this fight as there was absolutly no way that he could have fought or beaten any of the up & coming young guns & he knew that & talk about hitting the double jackpot in getting your opponant to concede everything from ringsize/gloves & round distance for just a few $$$$ more.

As we know hagler should have just rang across the ring & jumped Leonard as he did Hearns & so what if he conceded the 1st 2 rounds as by the 3rd Leonard would be back to his old flat footed self & would have no choice but to fight Hagler & there's only one winner there. What the flying **** was Hagler thinking about?? All this brooding & menacing attitude!!! why did'nt he show it in the ring??

I just wish that Hagler had adopted a more confident happy go lucky demeaner before the fight & especially at the weigh-in, he should have put his arm around Leonard & kissed him on the forehead & said at last Ray we meet!!! work his own psychology on Leonard who really was expecting proberbly to get a bit of a hammering if things did'nt go to plan...but they did go to plan did'nt they all thanks too a complient Marvelous Marvin Hagler who volantered himself as chief clown unto the Leonard Circus.

Lets not even mention the Hagler victory dance/boogie/****in cringing jig at the end:oops:

I scored the fight 115 to 113 for Hagler. Hagler had been the champ for seven years and I don't feel pitty pat punches fo the last 30 seconds of a round means you took the title from the champ.

    Scored it for Hagler myself.
Very, very close fight though. A lot of the rounds I think that judge scored for Leonard on those pitty pat flurries at the end of the round.
Or it may have been fixed. who the hell knows

Agree with this, still a close bout that could have gone either way, but that score card is some thing else.

There is a lot of this I totally agree with. Hagler hurt his own chances by coming out, orthodox and trying to `box` SRL. I do not feel the title should change hands this way, 30 sec flurries each rd. However, Hagler should have come out pressuring SRL and ground him down for the stoppage...

i find it strange that more people don't score it 6-6, considering pretty much everyone scores it 7-5 one way or the other. makes me think a fair few are letting bias cloud their judgement when it comes to this fight...

    Had it 115-113 Leonard myself.

Don't think there was anything rigged about it, the right man won in the end.

I dont think it was correct, but I doubt our wide score was corrupt. He was clearly influenced by Leonards flurries and thought they were doing more damage than they were.
Think of it this way: If you were swayed by the event, caught up in the moment, being unprofessional in that way, and instead of seeing Leonard pitty pat you saw him scoring with big barrages of power shots, you'd have him stealing many a round. Most of them, actually.

I scored it under this frame of mind, trying to mirror a weakminded judge, ringside for the event as it happened, being biased toward Leonard and the power in his shots and I came up with 117-111 Leonard.
