It's impossible to know for sure what motives or perceptions produced the 118-110 score for Leonard. The more I watch the fight the less convincing Leonard's performance appears, but without the benefit of re-watching it wasn't outrageous to give Leonard a CLOSE win. Really Hagler should have won it though, imo. Leonard really didn't do much at all, people give him too much credit for dancing around the ring. The man was holding from round 1 onwards. Hagler didn't exactly do a lot but he did the quality work.
Never hurt? Stop watching boxing if you can't figure out why people thought Hagler might have won or that SRL was hurt at points. I can see scoring for SRL, I didn't, but I can certainly see it.
The 118-110 ten score was outrageous but the right fighter won. But the fault in my opinion for Hagler losing was Hagler himself. And at the end deep down inside Hagler knew he through that fight away. (how many times have anyone see Hagler dance at the end of a fight.) It was a dead giveaway to me at least his true feelings. That false bravado act. I don't know who gave Hagler the advise to box at distance with Leonard (Leonards only chance at winning). but even casual fans of the fight game knew that was the wrong strategy. And by the time he finally figured it out Leonard had gained the confidence he needed and the fight was almost over. So lets stop blaming everyone else and blame the fighter himself (Hagler) for that loss.
Decent Card. However, I thought Leonard won the 11th and Hagler won the 12th. Also the 3rd round could have gone to leonard. So a draw would have been a fair result also.
I wouldn't say it was especially rigged for that particular fight. I would say Las Vegas has had some very questionable scoring in a score of championship fights.
Well, it depends who you think actually did the most work to win most rounds. I think most people would agree that Leonard fought the perfect way to maximize his chances. He did everything he could to make it appear in his favour. I think most would agree that Hagler's strategy was not as perfect and he made mistakes at least. But that in itself does not mean Hagler should forfeit the fight. I thought Hagler did enough to win in spite of his mistakes.
118-110 was way over the top but I still consider Leonard to have won it by around three or four rounds. He made all the early running thus banking the points for later.
You mean he ran around. I'm not sure he even won many of the early rounds. Him and Hagler did very little in the first 4 rounds. People remember Leonard showboating but I can't give points for clowning or grabbing the top rope or landing a low blow bolo. If anything those are deductable offences, not scoring moments.
No, Ray won the fight. But Marvin let himself get screwed out of his belt by not demanding certain things, like Title distance for one.
Well that judge was over the top but seriously Leonard won on points by a fair margin..hell Hagle gave the first four rounds away and hardly landed a punch and when he got going Ray won at least every second round after that. I do not see how anyone thinks Hagler was robbed except for Marvin who didn't see the fight because he was in it.
Hagler needed a KO before round 11 even began. Leonard was simply a lot smarter fighter that Hagler.... so smart he got Hagler to agree to just 12 rounds.
What did Hagler do ???? apart from fighting his worst fight in many years, and if Leonard hit as hard as Robinson the other Sugar he would have knocked Hagler out.... I think Hagler was a great middleweight but no way no how is he one of the best five.
even if you scored it for aggression, the best u can give hag was a draw. leonard was too active, and marv thought he could win rounds by just stalking leonard early on.
I had overwelming majority of rounds for Hagler. I like to see a fighter who forces the action and fights. Certain judges like to see certain things. There is no set criteria for what style wins. If that was boxing then there would only be 1 boring style.
