I'm not going to say that it's the best fight ever. But it's my favorite.
    I'm 37 years old. I don't remember it live.
But when any of my friends who are recently getting into boxing tell me about their favorite fights... There's only one YoiTube jive I recommend... And this is it :)

It was a different fight than I ever saw. Almost like they wanted to settle it in 30 seconds. The fact is lasted 3 rounds surprised many people who were there. I was not there. I wish I was. If Hearns could go back in time he would let Hagler come at him and not go as wild and counter with uppercuts and not break his hand I think he could have stopped Hagler, but hindsight is 20/20.. Hearns punched hard enough to stop anyone.

I watched it live on TV and was devastated when Hearns got KO'd .. I too think Tommy could have continued to wobble Hagler because he hit him so many clean shots with his right after the hand break ... BUT I will never forgot how the Hagler chin beat the Hearns power that night .. And at 160 Hagler is just too tough there for Hearns

I think it was dumb fight on Hearns part. But brilliant for Hagler. Hearns started believing his right hand could stop anyone including Hagler, got caught up in the moment and went all out to prove he could. If he fought a more tactical fight, used that jab and movement. He probably wins. Hagler on other hand wanted Hearns in front of him, trading with him early . It was Hagler best chance to win, a fire fight, a war of attrition. Wear Hearns out early , keep him from using all his natural advantages like height, reach, speed, boxing ability. (Remember Duran survived by boxing, Hagler, Leonard beat Hagler by boxing same with his earlier losses to Monroe and Watts) Coming at Hagler was a recipe for disaster. Movement, counter punching was the recipe for winning. Hearns fought a dumb fight in my opnion. It's the main reason Hagler beats all the ATG middles in history with exception of Robinson, or believe or not R.Jones. Fighters like Monzon,Greb,Walker, or any brawler jumps right into Hagler's biggest strength. Counter punching aggressive fighters.

Incredible, wasn't it? Immediately after the ref inspected the cut, Hagler turned the heat up.

yeah, there's never been another like it before or since

and right below you have the Ali - Fraziers

    and Robinson - Lamottas

    and the Leonard - Durans

Could Tommy have flattened Marvin had his right hand not broke? Exactly how when Marvin was still backing him up early and throughout the first round???

Face it, Hagler really was that great

It really was an odd fight ,both fighters were different fighters. Sadly a rematch would have answered more questions. Hearns may have taken this one with a solid right hand and better legs and Hagler being passed his prime. Hard to say,Marvin sure showed him who was boss that night.

I thought was the right game plan for Hagler. If Hagler fought in his usual style, it would have been a tall order since Hearns was very difficult to outbox at long range and also most dangerous when he got distance on his right hand to get better leverage.

With Hagler closing the distance, it was harder for Hearns to get the room he preferred for his right hand. For the most part, I credit Hagler for making Hearns fight that way. Hearns did throw bombs early on, but later on be tried to box and move but Hagler kept closing the distance.

This fight really showed Hearn’s vulnerability. At welterweight his right hand was almost unstoppable, but against larger opponents, he found that he couldn’t put them away all that easily. Hagler took his best shots and kept on coming. Hagler was like ‘is that all you got?’

Could he have won in a more tactical fight? Maybe, but I’m not convinced. He didn’t do all that well against Barkley, neither in their first fight nor their rematch, which Hearns promised to make into a boxing exhibition.
