Great fight, great night. If he was ahead, there are remarkable similarities to Hearn's first Leonard fight. Both had Hearns ahead on points, and had Hearns had opportunities to win in the end. They are Hearns beating Leonard on points, and also later causing the detached retina, and Hearns stopping Hagler on cuts.Leonard and Hagler had more in the tank in the end than the hitman, and obviously wanted it more..

I don't think he was. I though Hagler took round 2 and was looking the better man in round 3. Round 1 would have to be even. It was epic.

I agree with ETM's take. After the first it was all Hagler.

Not for me, I had Hagler winning both physically and mentally

To say Hearns was ahead against Hagler would be wrong imo. I have round 1 even -Tommy started well, Marvin closed the round on top. Round 2 was Hagler all the way and that was it. Even if Tommy had been ahead, only two rounds had been completed. It's neither here nor there with so little of the fight having happened.

Can't see the similarities in a 3 round war between Hagler and Hearns where there was as much action in the first round than in almost all of the 14 round tactical boxing match Tommy fought against Ray. Against Leonard, Hearns boxed and moved and Leonard slowly caught up to him. Hagler charged at Hearns and hit him non-stop while Hearns stood his ground and slugged back. There was as much action in the first round as there was in almost all of the first fight with Ray.

Also I think the detached retina was from the Bruce Finch fight the following February. I also wouldn't say that Hagler and Leonard wanted it more. Ray put Tommy through the ropes and Tommy got back up and tried to fight back; against Hagler, Hearns was about as out as a fighter can be while still conscious but still dragged himself up. Nobody could have wanted it more, his body just couldn't do what he needed it to do. A case of the spirit being willing but the flesh (relatively) weak.
