For a Welterweight yes. he was undefested in 30 something odd fights. most won by knockout. knocked out Cuevas & was considered pick ' em with Leonard going in. His career prime would have to be outboxing Benitez & lifting the WBC Superwelterweight championship. He had great power moving up. but nothing like the sickening power he had at Welter.

yeah I would say that was about his prime. I think his prime would have lasted longer, but the Hagler fight took a little out of him. His prime would have lasted another two years until 1987 had he not had that tough knockout loss. I would say prime 1984, 1985. The Leonard first fight was still when he was gaining experience. Some of those guys he struggled with in 1986-1989 would not have been stuggles had he fought them in 1984 and 1985, although his weigh was not high enough then, his skills would have been too quick.

In general I think there is a difference between "prime" and "peak." An exceptional fighter might stay in his prime for ten or more years. His peak may only last for a few fights. I think Tommy had entered his prime, but he certainly had not peaked.

From what I've read, that wasn't Stewart's idea; he was as surprised as anyone to learn it was taking place, and didn't like it, but Tommy ignored his concerns.

Aside from physically dragging him out of the ring, there wasn't much he could do to stop it.

I wasn't there of course, but read "Four Kings" by George Kimball.......it tells about that episode. Fantastic book by the way, in the top three boxing books I've read.

It says pretty much what I explained, that Stewart knew nothing about it until it happened, and he hated the idea, but that Tommy was being bullheaded and wouldn't listen.
