was Holyfield-Qawi I the last great 15 round fight?

Great fight. Shame that Mike Spinks-Qawi didn't live up to the billing.

 

Quite possibly although Canizales vs Seabrookes I was a very similar fight IMO

 

Twas a great fight. I don't know if its the last great 15 rounder though. As Greg says Canizales-Seabrookes was also a great fight, that in all honesty I prefer.

I've been meaning to watch Holyfield-Qawi 1 again for ages.

 

I think it's a great display of Spinks' awkwardness though; the doubling, tripling, quadrupuling of the left hand (and then some!) the slightly off-beat but precise timing of shots, and lanky frame gave Qawi too much of an obstacle IMO.

There's a train of thought on the Classic that Qawi goes into a shell after tasting Spinks' power early. I don't agree with that myself, Mike Spinks was a great 175lber, top five IMO, whilst Qawi is towards the end or just outside of tw top 10.

As to the OP, indeed, Qawi-Holyfield I is a great fight. The rematch is a great showing of Holyfields laser-like accurate right hand, which rivals Durans IMO (a fighter Holyfield clearly liked IMO in his mixing of boxing/pressure fighting)

 

Ive never seen this fight, i'm gonna watch it now.

Great fight. Holyfield's bait n snatch is something to behold.

 

Difficult to beat. In terms of consistency and intensity of action, if not in terms of significance, it exceeds FOTC for me - and that's not a bad analogy in terms of styles.

 

Holyfield lost something insane like a stone and a half during IIRC.

 

Yeah, read his book and he collapsed in the shower afterwards..... got to the hospital and was put on a drip.

They later told him how much fluid he'd taken and it was well over 20lbs, think he went down to 170lbs.

Seems he was pissing blood because he was burning muscle residue.

In a way I can understand why they ditched 15 round fights for exactly that reason.

 

Depends what you mean; a couple of fights (later than Holyfield/QawiI) that stick out that were 15 rounders but ended in the Championship rounds rather than went the distance were Bassa/McAuleyI and Brown/TriceI, also Paez/GroveI had drama.

 

It would not of mattered Holyfield, had blown up after the first four rounds, he was fighting purely on heart there after. It could be argued Qawi would been even more intense if he knew it was only a 12 rounder!

 

Was it the first time Holyfield went beyond four?

I know most people would love to see 15 rounds return, but I just think of Wlad vs Iggy..... :-(
