On his 14th fight, he fought Jim Watt for the WBC lightweight title and lost a 15 rd decision. In his 28th fight he fights Edwin Rosario for the WBC title and loses a split decision in PUERTO RICO. From then on it was slowly downhill. Davis was voted the best boxer of the '76 Olympic Team that included SRL and the Spinks brothers. Was Davis "rushed" and could he have been a decent champion?
yES IT WAS ONE OF THOSE FATHER/SON THAT TOOK AWAY FROM THE FIGHTER...I REMEMEBER HD jr in the amatuers he was great, Ray leonard and he were superstars but Howard fell short in the Pros
I think he was mismanaged, and was missing that special something inside, he had the talent no doubt, but unfortunately was never able to get into the legit swing of things.
I've heard Davis Jr. say that he lost interest in boxing by his first few professional fights, and basically just went through the motions afterwards in order to get paid.
No. He had no punch and no chin. His style was ideal for the amateurs, but his limitations were much more apparent and exposable in the pros.
Davis showed plenty of heart in getting pounded by Tony Baltazar & fighting back. Also against Watt, going the distance in a losing effort. Just couldn't dent an egg...
Davis had the ability to beat Watt, who was 32 , but Watt out -gamed him .Davis threw punches that were never intended to make contact ,they were often designed just to keep his opponent off him ,watch him jab countless times out of range. He had talent , but lacked desire.
Probably was, but it didn't help that Howard probably wasn't really into the game.Angelo Dundee, or Eddie Futch may have been a better fit for him.
I don't think so. He was one guy who couldn't get with the pros like the amatuers.. He lacked the full professional skill set. Breland was similar
