When I saw the title, I was going to say Valuev, but now I'm not so sure...Valuev wasn't/isn't short at all. And not dead either.

Barbados Joe Walcott is the first name that springs to mind.

I think Barbados may be the teeny tiniest bit overated by some.

Would've been my choice as well. A 5'1 Welterweight KO'ing some of the best Light Heavies and Heavies of the era. Remarkable.

That depends, I guess. His achievements are very impressive for a man of his stature, though. Then again, with a Kid Lavigne avatar I can see where you're coming from. Now there's a truly underrated fighter. Basically a larger version of Terrible Terry McGovern.

Yes, you've hit the nail on the head there, it's Lavigne I was thinking of, specifically. I made a bad post when I called him overated. He's not overated. But I do think he could be outfought. Lavigne and West are not pure boxers, in West's case you're looking at a deluxe pressure fighter, I think. Walcott was also lucky to come away with a draw against Gans, and probably against Langford. So it was like he epitomised his given style, he could be beaten at his own game, as well as out-boxed...that's probably what I am getting at, but you are right, once he achieved those wins against those bigger men, he cemented legendary status.

Like with Manny Pacquio he seemed to become more destructive as his opponents became bigger, presumably because they were easier to hit.

He basicaly beat or drew with the three best sub 175lb fighters of the period. If you can find sombody shorter than 5' 1'' who can do that then I will conceed that he is the best "inch for inch" fighter of all time.

Yeah gotta be Walcott. Disappeared and only found 20 years with an unmarked gravestone and an unidentified death certificate.
