It was an odd stoppage. Considered the (moderate) low blow, and that Weeks didn't give Kovalev a count. But considering how Kovalev looked and what transpired the minute before that it was a fine stoppage. Ward had generally controlled the boxing match since the 4th, Kovalev had keeled over when Ward landed clean body shots, he was backing away, he looked gassed, more than anything Ward landed that huge right that wobbled Kovalev, Kovalev had the look of quit on his face, Weeks was watching him, then Ward landed that uppercut as Kovalev was kneeling low to avoid body punches. And when he went down he sat down on the ropes, defeated. So not quite the way you want to see the fight end, but it was fair.
I agree.. Sitting on the ropes is completely different than taking a knee. One you look like a little bi*** and the other you just look gassed.
Ever thought it was actually a genius move by Kovalev had it not been unfairly ruled off? If he had taken a knee, he would have been forced to move towards Ward and put his head in the way of where Ward was throwing.
In round 8 he got hit low.. Weeks said it was good.. The second action started again.. Kovalev was the one coming forward after Ward throwing a 1-2.. But he hadn't recovered? BS there was no recovery period because he got hit on the belt
Our view was partially obstructed by the camera angle, but it appeared to hit the bottom edge / bottom half of the belt. I will take a closer look at each of the low blows as I've DVR'd it in HD. They were borderline. (by borderline meaning could have been ruled a low blow or could have been ruled not a low blow, very hard to make that determination in real-time) Again keep in mind that in RJJ B Hop 2 RJJ landed a similar one to that one in the 7th round and Weeks did rule it low and gave B Hop 5 minutes. But I personally didn't think he should have ruled that low. Understand that I'm not saying you couldn't rule that low, I'm just pointing out that it was in fact right on the border. (that it wasn't a clear no-doubt-about-it low blow)
It would take you 5 seconds of watching the clip i just posted to make you realise that the low blow in round 7, was nowhere near borderline.
I watched the clip you linked at 27:00 and that appeared to be the lower edge of the belt-line. The belt itself actually "shook" from the punch, so that suggests it hit the belt and not the cup, but in any interpretation it appeard to be borderline.
No it wasnt a good stoppage but ive seen worse. Kovalev made the mistake of trying to gain a breather from the low blows cuz he was hurt from the headshot and was seriously tired cuz he is a consistant mid round gasser. He hoped Weeks would tell Ward off and give him a couple of minutes, well he got more than a couple of minutes he got the rest of the night off and Ward didnt get told off he got his hand raised.
You're clearly watching a different clip. The glove is on the black section, that's below the belt. And the belt actually shakes upwards when you're hit below the belt, just ask malignaggi (Ward fanboy) and Nelson.
Watch the last round again, in slow motion with the computer monitor upside down if you have to . but in all seriousness, Ward landed about 20 unanswered punches on Kovalev. And Kovalev was backing up and unable to fight back. It looked like a legit TKO stoppage.
At the moment of contact, our view was actually obstructed. Another angle would be better, but it seemed to connect on the bottom edge of the belt. I'd categorize that as borderline, but it's reasonable if you see it as too low to be borderline. Particularly since an uppercut was thrown, whether it connects low or on the belt or on the body depends a lot on the movement and positioning of the opponent.
