I know the level of opposition was horrible (bob arum should be ashamed that he put this fight together) and it may be easy to say "naw its just that Gomez sucks that bad" (yea he does suck that bad) But with all that aside Cotto came in unbelievable conditioning, he didn't look SO bulked up at all. To me he looked very lean and light on his feet and in all honesty I think we got a little glimpse of the way Cotto used to move at 140lbs. I loved it and whatever he did in his training to come in light like that I hope he continues to do it. Because he was WAY more bulked up for the Judah/Mosley fights than for this fight. And I honestly think being less bulked out helps him much more than being so damn strong. And if Cotto vs Margarito comes off it will be another big ass kicking. Margarito is a tough guy but if Cotto shows up as nimble as he did tonight Margarito will be beaten to the punch at every exchange. I hope another absurd mismatch like this never has to happen again. Cotto should never have to take it easy on an opponent like he did last night, it was nothing but a sparring session that ended up with an outclassed opponent getting his face rearranged in a fight that was nothing but a sparing match. atsch
Gomez was a decent fighter. I don't know if he's a decent fighter anymore, I doubt it as Miguel destroys careers, but it was Cotto who was THAT great that it turned out to be an utter mismatch. Remember that Gomez brawled with MWs and SMWs and was never put on his a**. And Cotto hurt him with every single shot. Did he look like the 140lbs Cotto? No, the opposite. Cotto is a MW fighting now at WW and he looked HUGE even if his opponent was the taller one. He looked fantastic and the physical difference was once again stunning. I don't see Margarito, a natural WW getting the best of the brawls against a natural MW.
:huh Cotto is a very small guy he isn't a MW. If your trying to say hes like a middle weight because he annialated a guy that average level middleweights couldn't beat than I don't agree. Thats where boxing level and skill come into place. When you're getting popped by a guy that hits as clean as Cotto you aren't going to take it that long. The HBO crew said it the way it is, if you're fighting Cotto you shouldn't be getting hit by 50% of Cotto's shots period...If you're than the fight should be stopped no matter what. And I wasn't saying that Cotto looked like the 140lb version physically although he didn't look as bulked up in this fight which is good I think, but in terms of speed and combinations I think he did look very nice. Just pop in tapes of Cotto at 140lbs and you will see what im saying.
He looked like the "140 pound" Cotto in that the disparity in strength allowed him to absolutely brutalize Gomez the way he did, say, lesser opposition like Gianluca Branco. But this version of Cotto is so technically superior versus what he was three years ago, I don't see much point in the comparison. 140 pound Cotto wasn't nearly as smooth of a boxer/ counterpuncher. Then again, in the aftermath, you could probably make the case that the old 2005 "seek and destroy" Cotto torches 2008 Gomez also. Which like Mayweather - Bruseles, raises the question of why this fight had to happen, even though Cotto obviously deserved the right to a tuneup.
Hell no dude. You need to bust out the Cotto videos when he was 140lbs. He was PURELY a technical counter puncher with beautiful finesse to his offense. It has slightly changed recently when he has been forced to be the absolute aggressor and wear big opponents down. But last night he showed a lot of finesse, the type of **** he did at 140lbs.
