To be honest I couldn't agree more with Emanuel Stewart's assement of Jack Johnson, he mostly just fought middleweights and was mostly just known for his arrogance, had one fight against another game heavyweight (willard) and got his @ss kicked. Most will say jack probably had better defence but that's hard to say when you consider joe had better competition than Jack, easily overshadowed in every other department.
Much smarter. Louis was slow to adjust. He was mechanical. Look at his record in rematches. He was super talented but it had to be drilled in. Much tougher for him to make the adjustments mid fight.
Better defense and probably physically stronger (even though Louis was the harder and better puncher).
Being able to fight and punch going backwards is an underrated skill, and johnson definitely had that over Louis and the vast majority of hw champions incidentally. He was so ahead of his time it's ridiculous, why dont people appreciate him and do fight break downs or analyze his style?
It's not the politically correct thing to say butJack Johnson would not have been the same fighter, probably would not have been a champion, had he not participated in the Battle Royales. Learning how to fight blind folded was the reason that Jack was so good inside. How else do you consistently win fights against multiple people when you can't see them? You have to get inside and FEEL them.
I put Dempsey at no 3 with Louis at 4,but I don't know a 10th of what Futch did. http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/casey/MC_JJohnson.htm
Wait a minute. I was under the impression that most or many battle royals featured blindfolded fighters like this picture https://i.imgur.com/P18TnpG.jpg
I'm under the impression that the term encompasses all bouts that were comprised of several fighters, there were on occasion even one legged versions too.Adam Pollack ,in his 1st volume bio of Johnson quotes the San Francisco Call in1909 stating that Johnson participated in several "battle royals",no mention is made of the fighters being blindfolded.
Hmm, it's always been a theory of mine that the reason Johnson was so good inside was time spent fighting blindfolded. No need to see what you can feel, that grapplers sensitivity.
