    Not necessarily.

It could be the quality of the era, or it could be the quality of the fighter.

I suspect that which side of that debate you personally came down on would depend on whether we were talking about a historic fighter or a modern fighter.

Even in a weak era, it takes an exceptional fighter to do this sort of thing.

From Tunney's retirement until the rise and coronation of Louis was perceived as a weak era.:good

He had big muscles so I will partially agree with your thesis.

Sharkey was an excellent fighter. He had all the tools aside from a huge ko punch. He could move and box, he could bob and weave, good inside fighter, good outside fighter. Excellent jab, excellent defense. In many ways a step above most from that era.

You have to wonder what a steady head on his shoulders might have acomplished.

Sharkey was awesome. His bob and weave style mixed with his parries and awkward jab made him someone you didn't want to have to fight. He is definitely underrated.

Yeah. Maybe. Then we had Max Schmelling destroy Louis at 1. Idk. Young Stribling was active then. Yes Sharkey "maybe" could of beaten Gene Tunney. You have Primo Carnera whom Jack lost the championship against. That won't ever be excused! Idk. Can debate it forever and come back second and third and fifth time. Definitely Sharkey NO JOE LOUIS! & it is difficult to sense him mixing in good against JJW. Ezzard Chares vs the same Sharey who fought Dempsey would be interesting. I think GOD "won't let us figure" --ha ha-- between the era's. Notice: "Rating ****ysis" almost always lack criteria. When you looking at the Ages, I think that criteria IS needed. I mean, "socially" boxing REALLY COVERED in the Joe Louis ERA ["unknown Sport these days......"]
This might be OOP but.......aa) your "rating fighters" here. Quicky: 1-2-3: LYLE-NORTON-SHAVERS a.t. **not H-2-H!

I think you could argue that Jack Sharkey’s destruction of Tommy Loughran, is up there with Joe Louis’s destruction of John Henry Lewis, and Mike Tyson’s destruction of Michael Spinks.

This was Sharkey at his brilliant best.

Are you talking about the BLIND John Henry Lewis in his last fight?

I'm beginning to think I am discussing this sport with total neophytes.

How weak can the 1930s champions have REALLY been if one of the 1930s champions knocked out a prime Joe Louis?

I don't think Louis was prime.

I call Baer, and Braddock weak champions that's two out of the four that spanned the gap from Tunney to Louis. It was a weak era as far as heavyweights were concerned.

Joe Louis always said his fight with Baer was his prime.

    Schmeling came after that.
