There are a lot of kids that were ruined at that age.

I dont think Louis had to be in supreme shape for his career to survive that beating, just adequately conditioned. At least that much.

Even for an athlete, There is a world of difference between being adequately conditioned and being in "bad shape". just as there is a world of difference between preparation not going "as well" as you would like.

Fighters win most of their fights when their preparation did not go as well as they like! There's always a sparring partner who cancelled, a muscle that strained, weather preventing the kind of runs you want or need to do. If you win its all forgotten about. If you lose, it's a different matter.

Yeah, I've seen that video, ...it was about all the really subtle, effective things that Max was doing to Louis rather than a conditioning factor.

For many years, the first Louis-Schmeling bout was made out to be, and I bought in to it,...just a case of a young, green, unfocused Louis,...and Max decking him in the 4th, hitting him after the bell, and landing a bunch of right hands. This video is a gold mine that illustrates the brilliant fight..not just the brilliant strategy, but the tactics that Max used...the subtle moves and boxing maneuvers that Max used to perfection...and it truly impressed me and I believe boosts Max Schmeling's overall place and ranking in terms of him being a superlative fighter....at least he was on that night in 1936.

How about what he wasn't doing ie knocking him out once he was groggy.
Louis had Schmeling's eye shut after just two rounds, he got tagged in the 4th and never recovered Schmeling should have finished the job a lot earlier. He hit Louis with countless right hands yet he didn't go until the 12th? And people call it a master class?

    Exactly:good

The Full fight is a wonderful exhibition of experience overcoming youth. Very good quality film. Louis had his moments in there too. It was a great, great fight.

Oh bull****. Schmeling beat Sharkey in the rematch as well. To minimize his accomplishments because he got robbed as a ****ing german in the thirties fighting a mobbed up american fighter in ny is pretty disengenuous. Schmeling was a terrific fighter. No question.

He doesn't look impressive in the least in the footages to be called a great natural talent, of all time.

First it's well written that Louis was not focused going into his bout with Schmeling. He was young, undefeated, and breezing through the division. Instead of training as hard as he should have going into this bout he was playing golf a new passion of his.

Secondly Schmeling fought an incredible technical fight. Taking punishment early but taking advantage of openings to batter Joe with lethal right hands.

Historians give Louis great credit for taking the punishment he took over so many rounds. Any thought Joe could not take it was dispelled in this losing effort.

Fleischer wrote that Schmeling exhibited the characteristics of an ATG.

With a past of MDQ boxing extending only 40 or so years, the bar for "All-Time" wasn't, by definition, very high.

I'm not sure how this thread has so quickly degraded into these gross underappreciations of Schmeling's win over Louis.
Or how and why anyone could come up with such a thing anyway.

Schemling's performance against Louis was excellent.
