Montell Griffin MD12 James Toney broadcast. This is the fight right after the Jones fight, and the broadcast is revealing. Nowhere is his weight drained status questioned. It is viewed as fact.

    Excellent fight btw.

1:00 "Toney stormed out of a meeting...after it was suggested that he take a rematch at 168lbs...a weight that Toney had struggled to make."

This is the single most important factor in Toney's fury at his manager. This is the main problem they had.

1:10 Toney - "I don't want to hear no more about no 168 [after the struggle v Jones]."

Toney was absoultey clear that he didn't want to try for 168 ever again. It had proved to difficult last time out. He never did.

5:05 "James Toney has made weight at 175. It was not easy for him."

5:20 "Just hours before the weigh in, Toney was spotted working out in a spa. Losing weight."

    7:10 "I can never make 168lbs again."

Toney struggles to make the weight seven pounds north in his very next fight to Jones.

1:30 - "James Toney looks physically much better in the ring tonight than he did when he made 168 [against Roy Jones]."

Its been the norm in James career. Tons of talent, poor work ethic, and that video is more telling when you hear from his trainer and manager, that he didnt want to sacrifice and do what it took to be a mega star. Losing to Griffin in his next fight was more proof, he didnt know what the hell he was doing. He was the type of fighter that needed to work hard to make an uncomfortable weight, because he doesnt like to run or do any gym work besides sparring.

I will say Griffin was a good solid fighter. I always liked him. Really sneaky with his left hand

Was this reflected in the odds before the fight?

The you can probably say that it was reflected in the odds to some degree.

Bit of both but more so Jones's unorthodox style & game plan. I think we take for granted how good a Boxing brain Roy Jones has, probably because we associate him with speed and flashiness as appose to the technical side of the game.

I see it like this, Toney's style is based on making you miss to the point where you become so preoccupied with trying to hit him that you end up standing right infront (mid range/pocket) of him where you can be countered, remember its more difficult to counter punch someone unless you can draw them into mid range, thats why someone who is disciplined and can maintain distance can be effective against Toney's style.

Rahman did well with the jab in their first fight maintaining distance, although he did not get the decision, which he should have.

Roy Jones maintained distance against Toney and stepped off to the side when Toney went in his shell, he also got off the shoulder and threw triple left hooks which is a punch Toney bends into when you get off shoulder as he always bends to the right.
