At his best? Man, he had to lose like 40 lbs in two weeks before that fight. He was far from his best. If anything that fight goes to prove what a waste of talent he was.....because his chrap dedication robbed us of the chance to see without excuses who the best SMW in the world was. Roy probs would have whipped him but it was still very disapointing.

didnt knew that. still at least toney faced big names and made an name for himself.

guzman had all the talent in the world, judah like speed, floyds reflexes and solid power, yet weight issues and no promoter who matched him with big names ****ed it all up.

From outside the Americas,I'd say Kirkland Lang was the biggest waste.
Vargas was wasted in a different way.If he was matched a bit easier over a period of time,I think he'd have done a lot more.
Used to hate Vargas but feel sorry for him now.
Guzman is probably the biggest waste of this generation, with Zab not far behind.

I think vargas couldnt be any better than the version who had one of the greatest wars ever with tito. no shame at losing @154 tito, light middleweight trinidad version was an beast who would have defeated a lot of top guys.

well you can say guzman reached the top because he looked terrific in his prime, but I think he never reached it and if he had it, he hold it for 1 or 2 years which is very very short...

Not even close. He was always overrated.

Bigger wastes of talent include Corrie Sanders, Ike Ibeabuchi, Tony Ayala Jr., and probably most especially David Tua.

definitely an elite boxer.... who was afraid to lose (kind of reminds me of someone else)
That zero loss record can be a boxer's biggest liability, and prevent them from rising to true greatness. The "zero" becomes something a boxer ends up having to defend, and takes away any intentions of pushing one's talent and skills against another who could truly compete against the boxer. Instead, taking on defensive fights thats nearly a sure bet to win.

He had some good feathers in his cap though - Soto, Funeka, Beltran - but there could have been much more. Bigger pay days, even with a loss. In the end, he would have a greater legacy AND the respect of fans that a fighter MUST earn.

If you are never afraid to lose, you ALWAYS win. Even in a loss, you will gain respect and admiration from good fans who favors fighters who are courageous and brave.

everybody loses, even an prime jones got knocked down, even so he won than that bout, what I mean is, floyd should have faced casamayor, tszyu and freitas back than and also not an old, but an prime cotto or mosley. I know he can't face everybody, but in my eyes he would have won vs most. it certainly would have made him more likeable to fight margarito than baldomir :admin and more...loss or not. good fights, quality opponents is all that matters.

Oh, forgot an obvious choice. Valero was a much bigger waste of talent than Guzman ever was too.

Not the biggest waist of talent cause there have been very talented boxers to have commited huge career mistakes and I believe Khan was one of them and JuanMa is not far from have done the same. But Guzman was very well and doing the right thing until he simply was badly, horribly trained and managed...
