Guys like Bailey (I can't believe he hasn't commented) hang on to his every word. But the proof is in the pudding. It doesn't matter what he said, because we know what he did. It was Joe's prerogative to stay at SMW to repeatedly defend the WBO belt. He was immensely proud of his number of defences, and that was fine. But he and his fans have to realise that those actions were why he never got the bigger fights earlier in his career. He couldn't brag of his number of WBO defences, while at the same time saying he was avoided and he wasn't able to get the fights he wanted. He was never going to land a big money fight against the likes of Roy who was at LHW, while he was at SMW fighting mainly B class opposition for an organisation who wasn't respected. It simply doesn't wash with an educated fan.
Struggled with Jones??atsch He toy'd with him for pretty much the whole fight. And i believe his highest career punch out-puts came in those two fights.
Joe has bragged of his number of WBO defences on numerous occasions, last of which was last year when he was arguing with Froch through the media. So we know that he was more than happy to fight all those guys that he did.
These guys love to paint the picture that Joe was at a disadvantage. It was Roy who was touching 40, who'd been destroyed four years earlier by Glen Johnson.
Ricky Hatton could have avoided Mayweather and Pacquiao and retired undefeated, surpassing Calzaghe's 46-0 along the way too. If he did then I guarantee these same people would be convinced that Hatton would have won both fights, as well as rating him as the most talented LWW of all time. It's funny how people can be so sure that Calzgahe would have beaten prime Roy Jones when Calzaghe himself wasn't so confident and openly admitted so.
I think Eubank or Benn, at their best, would have been more dangerous for Jones. Calzaghe could perhaps win some rounds, at the cost of eating some very nasty counters, but I don't see him lasting the distance.
That would have been a good fight for sure, but it was Joe vs Roy I had in mind :good You have any theory about how Joe vs Benn would unfold, by the way?
it would unfold with calzaghe laughing (from the safety of Cardiff, never in front of benn) that benn hadn't proved himself worthy of a fight with joe. after which joe would then face T Pudwill.
Sorry for the late reply. I think Benn would had to have gotten under his skin and lured him into a shoot out to beat him. Joe's had a few macho tear ups where he was reckless and vulnerable. But if Joe was composed, I think he would have beaten him. My prediction would be Joe on points.
I could definitely see him getting the better of Joe in a shoot out, but I think Joe would definitely have caused him problems with his fast hands and volume. It's a tough one. Would Benn have respected his power? Would he have tried walking him down? Benn was my favourite fighter growing up, but he could be reckless, and he's been stopped before.
