I often see footage of past champions getting parades through cities. But I can't recall seeing any for Louis. Does anyone know if he was ever celebrated with a parade at any time during his career, or even lifetime?
What more can you do than beat Hitlers propaganda with your fists? Sheesh. He even put his legendary title defense record on the line with fights where he didn't make any money!! ****, it's a wonder he didn't turn into a complete lunatic after getting such a luke warm reception to such monumental and noble feats. They at least featured him in a TV Ad after he retired... ... in a damn commercial for a bank , where they had Louis say "I wish I had known about you guys sooner!"
I haven't found any evidence of a parade for Joe either; I googled 'Joe Louis parade' and the closest I could find was a picture of Louis on a horse in front of the Moulin Rouge in May, 1955 before the start of a parade in which he was a participant.
Why? This was before the war and it’s fine looking back in hindsight and say this was a great victory for democracy and freedom over fascism and hate but I doubt if most Americans saw it that way at the time. Most of the public at home probably didn’t know or care about what was going on in Europe at that time and it wouldn’t even surprise if if quite a lot of Americans were actually rooting for Schmeling to win.
He's been IN parades: * Was riding a horse in the Helldorado Parade, Las Vegas, in 1955. * African-American troops parade through Stowmarket (UK) to celebrate the visit of Joe Louis – heavy weight champion of the World in 1944. * participated in the The Bud Billiken™ Parade in Chicago.
Yes, he was thrown organized by the Department of Defense recognizing his contributions to the war effort and race relations. Unfortunately, unbenownst to Joe he was billed for the parade and it included in the amount owed to Uncle Sam.
Schmeling did have fans in america, but at this point and time there was much growing tensions between America and germany, the Nazis were openly racist we all knew that but we didn' know about the concentration camps yet, that' why max baer has the star of David on his trunks for when he fought schmeling, according to all accounts he was told he had to win for the Jewish people and is probably the bout he took most seriously, fdr even called in joe Louis to the white house before the schmeling fight to and told him "We need your muscles for democracy."
