The Boston Strong is getting plenty of ink ,thanks to Janitor's "Fight Of The Week"series. I was watching the face off between Dillian Whyte and Lucas Browne last night and it struck me Browne has some similarities to Sullivan,he has awesome right hand power, and he is usually bigger than his opposition. Browne himself admits he isn't that good a boxer ,but says his power is his "get out of jailcard",.Even though prize fighting was still in its relative infancy regarding skills Sully seems to have relied heavily on his, fast into range ,take it to him, aggression and power. Are there distinct similarities between him and Browne,in this respect, or was Sullivan much further ahead of the pack? What do you think?
Interesting comparison. I don't think he's on the same level, and Sullivan was far more famous and successful, but I don't think that invalidates it. I don't think skills really go in a time series. Boxing had been around for a long time and there had already been some extremely skilled fighters beating bigger and younger foes. Jem Mace was a prime example, and it's telling so many highly regarded boxers were developed in Aus. Plus there's plenty of boxers now who get to a high level with poor or highly flawed boxing. Trouble is we have Sullivan in his prime blowing away everyone, but AFAIK not enough information to figure out just how good they were. And then he goes into serious decline, but showing he had a lot of heart and toughness. Wasn't Sullivan's speed pretty highly regarded too? So I don't think that matches up. Maybe Browne and old John L though. Brown's heart has yet to be proven as much (and it'd be hard to with modern rules), but he came up against a fair bit of adversity in hostile territory against Chagaev.
No, and I don't suppose he will ever have a film made about him,but it was a simpler time back in John L' s day.
