It is hard to dispute that Johnson was just one left hook away from defeat.

Would have needed to be one hell of a left hook though!

Watch the fight! Flynn was beaten to a pulp. This thread is among the most ridiculous I have seen on these boards. Freeman's accounts match the Call's account and both match what you see watching the bout. Fleischer also wrote it was a one sided bout.

Wrong ! Johnson was fighting for a $30,000 gaurantee and shortly before noon on the day of the fight the promoter Jack Curley handed Johnson a certified cheque for $31.100 page 612 Adam Pollack's, " Jack Johnson The Reign". That same day Johnson received a telegram from the promoting McMahon Brothers offering him a fight in NY with Joe Jeannette for $20,000,Johnson later turned this down as it didn't meet his price of $30,000,they then upped their offer to $30,000 which Johnson accepted, Jeff O Neil the boxing commissioner of New York, then declared he would not allow Johnson to box in his state, again this is from Pollack's book.
A telegram challenge from Jeannette guaranteeing Johnson $20,000 was read out in the ring.As to the fight.
The local paper, the Las Vegas Optic:
"Flynn displayed no ability throughout the fight. He was cut about the face until blood ran down his breast in a stream.
He was utterly helpless from the first round on and by the sixth was deliberately trying to butt the champion's chin with his head.Time after time as Johnson held him powerless in the clinches Flynn lifted his head upward.Smith warned him repeatedly but it did no good.In the seventh he began leaning upward every time he could work his head under Johnson's chin.Flynn's feet were both off the floor time and again with the energy he put into his bounds.
Sometimes he seemed to jump two feet into the air in frantic lunges at the elusive black jaw above him."
" Through it all the champ was smiling. He evaded Flynn's attack with the utmost ease, opinion was unanimous that he could have put Flynn down and out at anytime he happened to fancy it.
The champ opened up only once, early in the fight ,when Flynn landed his only good blows right andleft hooks to the jaw ina clinch.Johnson appeared nettled and smashed right uppercut though the guard, which rocked Flynn on his feet. Then the champ smiled again and went back to his monotonous chopping uppercuts in the clinches which reduced Flynn's face to a bloody mask."

"It Appeared that Johnson was not attempting to hit hard.He was content with a slow coldly scientific chopping ,every blow finding its way through the barricade of gloves and elbows behind which Flynn crouched Johnson gave a perfect exhibition ofguarding and hitting in the clinches.
Not a blow Flynn started reached him with any steam behind it.
They were smothered or tossed aside, unless Johnson chose to allow his opponent to batter away at his stomach smiling all the time over Flynn's shoulder"."When it was over there was not mark on Johnson's body, other than a cut inside his lower lip".

The Alburqueque Evening Herald's same day report said," Flynn was slaughtered, and beaten unmercifully, outgeneraled and outfought at every stage in every round so therefore he resorted to butting tactics." "Flynn's face was chopped and cut frightfully" Johnson made no serious effort to hurt Flynn at any time.Apparently he held himself in check even when Flynn's butting tactics were at their worst,Johnson had not a singe mark beyond a slight cut inside his lower lip".

Claude Johnson of the Kansas City Star, gave this ringside report:"Johnson was too strong and skilful for the gritty PUeblo Fireman. It was a bloody fight .From the 1st round the white hope's fight was hopless.Johnson ws as fast as ever ,his wind held out and he had al the cleverness and punch." Flynn had told the reporter prior to the fight that he would not take the full count, and that if the going got too rough he was liable to bite and kick rather than suffer humiliation at the hands of a negro".The champion before the fight said , "I don't want to win on a foul, nor do I want to be be bitten .An even break is all I want and ten rounds will end the battle".page 629 ,Pollack's book.
"After the fight Flynn's nose was broken his eyes were black, his cheek cut open and his lips and both ears puffed" And this was from a champion who was not going all out!
The Santa Fe New Mexican same day report ," the fight ended in a fizzle when Flynn ,bleeding profusely from the mouth, and his face beaten to a pulp repeatedly fouled until the city marshal sprang into the ring and stopped it".The Denver Post said"Johnson could have put Flynn out whenever he wanted.he was merely playing with him and seemed to have the situation under perfect control from start to finish"
Both men had agreed to straight Queensbury Rules as in protect yourself at all times and hitting in the clinches was allowed.
You should read Adam's book ,you might actually learn something about the subject you continuously make a complete c**t of yourself on

Sometimes your stupidity surprises me even after all these years.

    Marquess of Queensberry rules:

To be a fair stand-up boxing match in a 24-foot ring, or as near that size as practicable.

***No wrestling or hugging allowed ***

The rounds to be of three minutes' duration, and one minute's time between rounds.

If either man falls through weakness or otherwise, he must get up unassisted, 10 seconds to be allowed him to do so, the other man meanwhile to return to his corner, and when the fallen man is on his legs the round is to be resumed and continued until the three minutes have expired. If one man fails to come to the scratch in the 10 seconds allowed, it shall be in the power of the referee to give his award in favour of the other man.

A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down.

No seconds or any other person to be allowed in the ring during the rounds.

Should the contest be stopped by any unavoidable interference, the referee to name the time and place as soon as possible for finishing the contest; so that the match must be won and lost, unless the backers of both men agree to draw the stakes.

The gloves to be fair-sized boxing gloves of the best quality and new.
Should a glove burst, or come off, it must be replaced to the referee's satisfaction.

A man on one knee is considered down and if struck is entitled to the stakes.

That no shoes or boots with spikes or sprigs be allowed.

The contest in all other respects to be governed by revised London Prize Ring Rules.

    >>
It is obvious even to a bigoted double standard person like yourself that Johnson not only clinched, he held body parts. AKA Wrestling. This is not straight Queensbury Rules. I posted them for you so you just might learn something.

Johnson complained to the referee quite a bit in several rounds ( a first for him ) and could have used his first more often, but he'd rather clinch and wrestle vs an unskilled Flynn.

As Senya showed us many at those at ringside felt if the match had gone one anyone could have won as Johnson was tired.

Flynn was bleeding, but very fresh. Would Johnson have wilted had the contest gone on for more rounds? Unknown, but he sure shut down vs. Hart, and faded vs Willard. Those were long fights. This one was scheduled for 45 rounds, so there's a chance Flynn could have been the last man standing.

Yet another less than flattering result for your wife beating idol. Any decent champion would have blasted Flynn out of there. Flynn was already KO'd 11 times prior to this match.

Or it's easy to land when the other guy is tired. Flynn is terrible, but he did have some power. Enough to KO Jack Dempsey in one round.

I know the Queensberry rules numb nuts. Now read this you cretin!

"Referee Ed Smith met with the fighters on the 2nd to discuss the rules. The combatants agreed to fight according tp straight Queensberry rules, which meant they would protect themselves at all times, including in clinches and on breaks. They could use their free arm as long as they were not hodling with the other arm.Hitting as they stepped out of a clinch was permissible. They agreed to break at the referee's command".

Now you who have never boxed shut the f*ck up about something you know jack sh*t about.Just like when you tried to say Johnson fouled Burns by hitting him on the break, though again both boxers had agreed to it!
    Haters got to hate! Boxers that have hit women;
Jim Corbett was taken to court by his wife for hitting her
    So was Sam Langford
    Jack Blackburn
Ray Robinson forced his wife to have a couple of miscarriages because of the beatings he gave her.
    Jake Lamotta hit his wife.
Joe Louis nearly strangled Lena Horne.
Randy Turpin hit his wife and other women.
    Bobby Chacon
    Carlos Monzon
    Diego Coralles
    Mike Tyson
    Floyd Mayweather .

What exactly has it to do with the thread? As I said haters got to hate.

I dont give two shits what a bunch of reporters say. I have the entire fight on film, every round, and Flynn came nowhere near beating Johnson. Thats the most asinine assertion Ive ever heard. If some "respected" journalists thought he did then I have to question whether it was wishful thinking or wanting to jazz up a report of a disappointing fight because Flynn is in that fight no more than Ketchel, Burns, or Jeffries and anyone who says otherwise doesnt know what their looking at. Flynn was so frustrated at his complete and total inability to do anything even verging on success with Johnson that he had to resort to one of the most ridiculous and egregious examples of fouling ever caught on film in the misguided hope that it would somehow garner him some small success.

Reports on Ketchel, Burns and Jeffries pretty much match the video of shown rounds. So why would the reporting be different here vs the least skilled man Johnson was filmed with? It doesn't wash.

The question was not if Johnson was winning easily. He was. The question is not whether Flynn was flying or Johnson guilty of excessive holding. We all saw that.

The question was Johnson's stamina in a 45 round match in a July match in the desert. Got it? Those at Ringside wondered if Flynn would outlast him in a 45 round match. They were there. You were not! Since you say you have the full film, can you tell us what Johnson's punch output was like in rounds 6-9? I'm guessing very low.

Maybe they were of the "Mendoza Persuasion"? Mendoza says the first ten rounds of Johnson v Jeffries were about even! Flynn told the Kansas City Star reporter he would foul out if he looked like getting stopped consequently the reporter predicted Johnson to win on a foul.

Johnson had not fought in exactly 2 years, he correctly predicted the fight would not go past 10 rounds.Flynn fouled out to save himself any more punishment as he told a reporter, Claude Johnson of the Kansas City Star he would!

The reporters said both were strong enough to continue. And naturally that gives Flynn a chance, even if only a small one, to outlast Johnson. They didn't claim that he would, but there was such possibility.

    So much misinformation!

Johnson did not hold. He allowed his brawling opponents to get in close and then controlled the action. Flynn was free to punch but Johnson took away his leverage so the blows lacked any power. There are times during this bout where Flynn, in close, throws left hooks to Johnsons chin and if you watch in slow motion he picks off these powerful blows just before they land. Picks them off then controls the action once again.

This was the most one sided bout Johnson ever fought in terms of his filmed encounters.

It's one thing to hate a fighter but quite another to hate a fighter so much to pick historical information apart in order to produce a false history. Why believe and try to convince others a complete untruth? What's the purpose? Just plain crazy. Warped sense of logic.

I don't remember reading one source that claimed Johnson wasn't guilty of foul work in this bout, same as Flynn. Both fouled, Flynn being bigger offender. This was the referee's opinion, as well, as I quoted above.
