McVey was something of a reluctant puncher on film. He was not a swarming type of fighter. On film, McVey advanced slowly, trying to land a clubbing left from the outside. Sam Mcvey was not one to mix it up on the rounds I have with him and Battling Jim Johnson. On news reads, McVey at times complains to the ref. For a man his size, power and build, this is a tad odd.
