Definately, Jones locked into a shell. He was done along time ago. Even when he was doing well he couldn't truly make up his mind.

I actually thought he looked better than he ever did since Tarver I. He looked horrible in Tarver II, Johnson, etc. Against Trinidad en Calzaghe he at least looked alright and went the distance without being hurt. I think his body sort of adapted back again to the weight loss, but ultimately, it ruined him faster than it was ever ruined any great fighter.

Since Ruiz his condition has been on a steady and gradual decline, so no.

well acording to roy and merk, yes!

thats better than an opinion of some posters on a boxing forum, who again revert to age and prime to denegrate calzaghe's domination of the man 2 years his elder!

he was in top shape,it was clearly evident.

    its just fact.

He may be in his best condition he could have been, but it doesn't matter when his reflexes, speed and power are all gone.

I did as well as it got underway, but looking at the replay a few more times I can see that Roy may have been putting up a good front. There were all sorts of subtle hiccups and indecisions that he made during the period that he was looking good in the early going. His secondary wave of assault after knocking Calzaghe down was half-hearted and feeble, and he spent alot of time waiting overall. Waiting on Calzaghe is suicide - and Jones knew that before he signed the fight, and he still couldn't keep himself from doing it. Tactically, Jones came apart in a big, big way almost from the get-go. He unraveled. He failed miserably.

Perhaps you havent seen Roy in top condition before but it certainly wasnt on display over the past weekend..

He looked pretty lean? :-( Get the **** outta here with that bullsht. I can't begin to count all the "lean" fighters I've seen have their ass handed to them. You don't have a goddamn clue

I think he was in great condition but obviously he is shot compared to the fighter he once was. I see his speed and reflexs slowed but he was still in very good hsape he just didn't have enough left in the tank.
As some people have said in other threads i don't think he was shot as a fighter i still think he would beat a fair few guys at that weight but compared to a prime roy he was shot.

First of all, Jones couldn't have looked horrible in Tarver II, you can't judge that from 1,5 round.

Second, Jones won at least 2 rounds, maybe 3 against Johnson. You're saying he looked better vs Calzaghe, but how many rounds did he win? 1?

And he was SUPPOSED to look good vs Tito. Trinidad had no business whatsoever fighting at 170, which is 15 pounds over his best weight, after a 3 year inactivity.

I agree with your comment about his body getting ruined, of course.

what calzage did was destroy jones mental game... a lesser fighter would have tried to recoup after the knockdown, tried to shake off its effecets...cal. came right back, firing..and then showed NO trepidation in the folowing rounds....

had jones been fighting a less mentally strong fighter than joe, he would have steamrollered over the guy, possibly scored a ko, at the very least mentally and physically bossed the fight.....calzaghe plaind didnt allow him to do so....

im always amazed at teh people on this forum who, leading up to a fight, talk up a fighters chances, then when he is resoundly beaten, loudly shout..shot fighter..shot fighter.....fellas, both these guys are past their prime....joe calzaghe battered roy jones..and that is what goes down in the history books.....its not like when marciano battered louis, or even when lewis took out tyson.....these were two guys of compareable ages in excellent physical condition at the end of their respective careers.....joe just had much much more left in his tank than rjj......

You wouldn't want me to get Zambidis over there and kick your arse now, would you? :!:

Seriously now mate, here's how I see it:

In the Calzaghe fight Jones was nowhere near the level he was at when he fought Ruiz back in 2003. Hell, you could even see he was clearly past his best in the first Tarver fight.

After the 2 brutal knockout losses at the hands of Tarver and Johnson, he slowly regrouped, but the level of opposition he faced afterwards was not A level, far from it. Every sane person could see he was NOT the fighter he used to be, in the fights with Prince Ajamu, Hanshaw and Tito.

I truly expected Jones to do a little bit better in the Calzaghe fight, but he did less than I thought he could. You know my view of the Welshman, he's a great fighter, but the man just can't take much credit for this win, simply because Jones way past his best (Joe on the other hand is still at a pretty good level) and the fight played out as expected, because of that.
