Parker invented the blueprint to beat Ruiz

    AJ did it even better

Ruiz being out of shape. AJ changed his style but even then whenever he didn't keep it straight Ruiz was able to counter. Anytime AJ through a hook he got cought. Ruiz should really be kicking himself because he didn't give himself the chance of the second win.

OF course Ruiz shape matters. He cought AJ in 4 and 8 but couldn't sustain an attack. In the first fight he had to soak up AJ's shots and get up from the knockdown but he then managers to counter and put Joshua down. If then picks his moments to raid forwards and lands clusters of shots. He couldn't do that second time around, a big part of that is he weight wouldn't allow him to throw more than 2 punches at a time. in the 2nd fight there is no body work. He couldn't close the gap even when he got openings in 4 and 8. Joshua did better in terms of his use of the jab in the second fight but his stamina wouldn't have held up to a Ruiz in better condition. Ruiz was a sitting duck and AJ was able to dictate.

In the first fight Joshua put Ruiz down hard in the 3rd, understandably Joshua then jumped in to apply the finish but walked onto a shot from a surprisingly unhurt Ruiz. The Ruiz shot landed above the ear which effectively disoriented Joshua who never recovered despite more rounds.

There was no lead up bodywork to create an opening from Ruiz, it was a sloppy mistake by Joshua who was too eager to impress the US viewers and broadcasters.

Having lost the titles Joshua could not afford another sloppy loss by recklessly jumping on Ruiz and trying to blow him away, so he trained to box from the relative safety of the outside. That tactic was formed with a fit, confident Ruiz in mind, Team Joshua obviously felt that this chosen tactic was right to beat Ruiz at his best.
It wouldn’t have mattered if Ruiz came in at 250lbs he was never getting close enough to trouble Joshua and even if he had there’s no guarantee he’d land that one moneyshot again!

Yup. I think Joshua's adjustments for the second fight would have still beaten an in-shape Ruiz

Put it this way, If Joshua had been wearing Ruiz's 30-40lb of excess baggage instead would he have won? Doubt it.

A little of both but remember that Ruiz didn’t come in shape the first fight either since it was on short notice. The biggest difference was that AJ took it seriously the second fight, I’m sure AJ would of won the first fight also (probably by stoppage) if he took it as serious.

Funny thing is that Ruiz managed to come in worse shape the second fight even though he had all the time to prepare...

Ruiz was alot slower in the 2nd fight yet Joshua avoided him like the plague. There was a moment late in the fight where AJ decided to engage Ruiz in an effort to take him out, Ruiz got the better of that exchange and AJ ran away on his bike and never did it again. I'm sure a better shape Ruiz, even from the first fight, would have taken out AJ a second time.

Doesn't matter though, there will be someone else that will knock out Joshua again. Maybe even Pulev.

Ruiz had the chance to come in better shape. He chose not to.

Alarm bells should be ringing almost as much after the second fight imo. The first fight could have always been a one off upset. But to go away and need to prepare in the way they did points to me...their gonna struggle against any sort of puncher. Not just that his boxing and moving was hardly convincing against a guy well overweight and small.

Honestly feel that the 2nd fight has done almost as much damage. Joshua with his height advantage greater athletism...better length should be dominating ruiz on the front foot. If he cant do that...hes miles away from where he needs to be. Looked at lennox. Two guys knocked him out. It happens. He came back and battered them both for it. To come back and need to dodge about for his life with a much smaller out of shape guy....it actually is almost as damaging as the first fight.

Anyone that could knock you out like joshua can...should not be on the backfoot in the first place unless its to set up power shots. Alot of people criticise wilder but his trainers actually had a better idea. Came totally unstuck against fury but wilder was a nightmare for guys smaller than him...that was mainly down to their tactics. Joshua should employ something like that. Needs to learn to set his opponent up for an attack.

Ruiz never had a chance against Joshua if he used gameplan of fight two. Joshua was visually off mentally pre fight and stupidly fought ruiz's fight in #1.

That said, in a close quarters fight without all of the movement from Joshua I would pick Ruiz to win again

I mentioned before the rematch that Joshua would beat Ruiz if he stayed on the outside since Parker was able to neutralise him for large stretches when he kept him on the end of his jab. Ruiz has fast hands but slow feet, and he's just not that adept at pressing the action. Maybe that's a result of his weight, or maybe that's just who he is as a fighter. We'll likely never know.

In answer to the question, did Joshua beat Ruiz because Ruiz came in out of shape? No, he beat him because he learned from his mistakes and devised a gameplan centred around exploiting Ruiz's weaknesses. Had Ruiz come into the fight around 250-260 he would still have been outboxed, just not perhaps as badly.

I really don't think this was a matter of Ruiz being out of shape.

Ruiz clobbers anyone who tries to use inside boxing against him, but he's easy to beat via outside boxing -- Ruiz is slow with little t-rex arms.

Parker could make the switch in the middle of his fight with Ruiz -- from inside to outside -- and hence could beat Ruiz.

AJ is too robotic and limited, so he needed an entire camp to rehearse basic outside boxing. Pathetic really.

AJ hardly looked like Floyd Mayweather in the out-boxer style against an unmotivated and out of shape Ruiz.

If AJ positions himself well then Ruiz won't be able to land a punch on him.

You could see how effort AJ had to put into it though and at points in the fight did hold his feet.

A bigger man like Fury land freely on AJ. Big stiff lump.
