Ok so I will first up admit that I tend to be a contrarion. But I do not quite understand the huge deal being made out of the Joshua Klitschko fight. I think it is more a reflection of the absolute rubbish hit and grab tactics that we have been subjected to over the last 10 years by Klitschko. All we really saw was 2 guys fighting a real boxing match in the way it should be fought (without all the grabbing and wrestling) and I think everyone was suddenly so thrilled because they were almost in disbelief that it wasn't just a standard Klitschko heavyweight grab and wrestle fest. It was a good fight to watch and I am not knocking it but seriously I didn't think it was as amazing as the (mainly British) press have made it out to be (it's something they very much tend to do in UK and for the record I am from UK). I definitely do not see this as an epic top 5 heavyweight clash of all time as it is being made out to be, how that even be possible if one of the guys is 41 with nowhere really to go. Basically for the first time Klitschko came up against 2 heavyweights (Fury and Joshua) that were too big for him to hug and grapple with and he lost. It was almost to be expected really and at 41 I just don't see why Joshua is being treated as the second coming. And as much as I dislike Fury I feel really bad for the guy. He has been forgotten while Joshua is being worshipped as a god. Its a shocking example of how the media decides who will be the person everyone rallies behind. I dont like Fury but I really hope it beats Joshua if they ever meet. Am I missing something?
maybe i watched it through the rose colored glasses of yester year forman vs moore old vs young, ali vs forman master vs beast. but it was exciting and drama filled victory and defeat teetering on the next right hand or upper cut. I thought I heard dondee say you loosing it kid............ . And the boxing was good too LOL.
Multiple knock downs in the fight...Both fighters hitting the floor and getting back up. That's what we want to see. In fact I personally can't think of a heavy weight fight were that has happened in a very long time!
I loved it, I rewatched it again the next day and still enjoyed it greatly. Been ages since we've seen a top heavyweight fight have that much drama. And yes the fact the last decade has lacked any great top heavyweight fights does highlight the quality of this fight, but you can't say it wasn't a good fight.
Was a great fight for the occasion. 90k fans, open air stadium. Both fighters coming back up from KDs. Nobody can complain. One of the ATG fights in history.
It was good with both fighters bringing out the best in each other. To say otherwise is delusional. Was it the best fight ever? No. But it was likely the second or third best Heavyweight fight in the last fifteen years.
"But it was likely the second or third best Heavyweight fight in the last fifteen years" Yes fully agreed...but that is really not saying much given what we have seen in the last 10 to 15 years which is kind of my point.
"One of the ATG fights in history" That to me is insane....not even one of the all time heavyweight fights, but one of the all time greatest fights??...no way, this is nuts...exactly my point really.
Nearly every entertaining fight can be picked apart and fighters criticised, because normally mistakes lead to action. It was an entertaining fight, we as fans want to be entertained, we want to see those knock down drag out type fights with explosive action and ending definitively and that is exactly what we got. I've watch ridiculously entertaining fights that have been really low level, southern area title level but they were still very entertaining. What we saw was two fighters who on the night were rather evenly matched, AJ on the rise and WK on the decline, they seemed the cross over and met at around the same level and that made for a great spectacle. Sure we can pick holes in it, criticise both fighters, point at flaws, talk down both men but most boxing fans were throughly entertained and that why we watch boxing and part with our money.
Wlad`s reach and power are amazing! For Joshua to come back after that knockdown was brilliant and sheer entertainment! Joshua`s power and reach are also awesome that`s why the fight was on a constant knife-edge, the fight could have ended at any moment not just because of their power but because of their ability through training methods and reach to land, Wlad constantly hid his fast right hand using his left to feint (the way Wilder tries to) then follow up with the right. Fury used good movement and a jab that rarely landed to spoil Wlad, whereas AJ came looking for the KO a far more difficult task and the reason he got hit more than Fury! I`m very happy I watched this fight and I wish the great fighters involved in great fights in the past could be around now because I think their matches with AJ may have been even better than his match with Wlad!
Was it a good fight? Yes. Was it an all time classic like some are making out? No. It's also overrated because the HW division has been pure shite for a long time now. It looks great in comparison.
Everyone that watched it with me said it was the best fight they had ever seen through all weight classes. The papers the next day said the same thing, so there might be something to it.
I imagine if you watched on replay knowing the result it wouldn't have been as exhilarating. It was one of the best fights ive watched. Even the tension as they walked to the ring was just immense.
