When a fight is close, when it swings one way then the other, when you genuinely don't know until the latter stages who might win, when one fighter is knocked down but gets up to knock down his foe the very next round, when there are multiple other knock downs and the coup de grace is delivered late on in the fight in front of a massive crowd on the biggest of stages for the right to claim the title of unified champion, then yeah you've watched a very good, meaningful fight. Correct, you are being a contrarian...
Think it was the magnitude and pressure behind it. Kind of like winning scoring a goal in world cup final . Everyone expect caution when the sh1st on the line whereas they went for it . Whyte v chisora was another very good recent hw dust up
I thought it was excellent. I watched it knowing the outcome and I was still entertained. Best ever bla dee blah ... no. But it set a standard for what a HW fight CAN be.
Depends what you mean by THAT GOOD. Was it amongst the top few select best fights in heavyweight history? I dont think so but if it makes you even consider it it must be an amazing fight. And it was, had a bit of everything, shots that look beautiful in slow mo, both of them hitting the deck, and all those ppl that put money on an AJ victory may of won some money but i bet anywhere from the 6th to the 10th they would of loved to of got their money back. You may get more twists, more knockdowns, more warry wars, some serious skills and a huge crowd but not many fights manage to fit all of those things into 1 fight.
It was definitely one of the atg hw fights, to say otherwise is crazy. When was the last time we saw TWO ELITE HW's battle it out like that ? I literally can't remember the last time we bad 2 truly elite HW fight Like that. We had 3 fights rolled into 1. Rounds 1,4 Aj took them 5 and 6 almost all wlad by beat down then 7,8 even but swaying toward Aj then 10,11 all Aj by beatdown
Classic fights are ones that capture the essence of the entire spectrum of the human fighting spirit and emotion and this fight was a perfect example of that. At first AJ hurt's wlad knocks him down, The crowd and everybody at home is on the edge of their seat thinking this is it, AJ's about to know this guy out!, Suddenly your emotions take a huge shift as AJ is then the one nearly out on his feet and it looks like hes about to be knocked out. This is epic emotional roller coaster type stuff, Then AJ gets dropped from a huge right hand, We've never seen him down, for a moment you don't even know if hes out cold, then he gets up and before you can think oh **** he got dropped your thinking oh **** here comes wlad to finish him off... Then to top it off after all that AJ comes back and takes out wlad in the 11th in epic fashion. That was some real life rocky **** in front of 90k fans in the biggest event British boxing history, a lot on the line for both fighters. Neither of them gave up in any way shape or form during the fight. put their heart and souls on the line, how in the **** could you not see this was a classic fight? What on earth do you expect a classic fight to look like?
It was a great, great fight on a number of levels. First of all, it was for all practical purposes, the real championship as we had the two demonstrated best HWs on the planet facing each other. It answered questions fans had regarding both boxers. Could Joshua up his game to world level ? Was Wlad washed up ? How would the respective chins stand up to the heavy hands of the combatants? In addition to the 'event importance' factor and the 'questions to be answered' factor going in, we got a fight where both men rose to the level of the occasion, both gave their best performance in some time, maybe ever, and both overcame adversity as the fight unfolded. The fight had excitement, Knockdowns, ebb and flow, suspense and an exciting finish. I'm a Wlad fan and was rooting for him to pull this one out, but I like Joshua too and was very happy for him when he got the victory. It certainly wasn't the greatest HW battle of all time but it was up there.
Just read back the RBR thread for that fight, you can see the emotional effect it was having on people just from their replies, I felt high for a good 24 hours after that fight, that fight effected my body's physiology, Its one of those fights boxing fans will remember for the rest of their life. The build up and magnitude of the event all play a part in the overall package the fighters topped it off. You can't name a HW fight in the past 10 years that comes close, 10 years is a long time to wait to experience a true classic based on that it doesn't have to be the best of all time to have the impact it had, For some new fight fan's that would have been the greatest fight they have ever seen live. I can't imagine what it must have been like to watch fights like the Thrilla in Manila, sugar ray vs hearns etc live, epseiclay back then before the days of the internet and social media, Boxing star's were truly mythical almost god like unhuman people to the public. Truly amazing times to be a fight fan.
It was an absolute classic. It certainly wasn't the greatest heavyweight fight in history, nor the greatest I can remember. It might be the best heavyweight match I've seen since Holyfield and Bowe were around though. .... and that's over 20 years ago.
Rounds 1 to 4: pretty much nothing happened Round 5 was epic, one of the biggest in hw history, Round 6 was Wlad putting a beating on AJ and AJ barely surviving, Rounds 7-9 nothing happened, both fighters were seemingly recovering from al the action in the previous rounds, Round 10 was AJ again on the front foot, and Round 11 was AJ hammering Wlad around the ring until the stoppage. So we got one great round sandwiched between rounds where nothing happened or consisted in one of the fighters dismantling the other. In the end, a very good fight, but not even close to the greatest in history. Too many boring or one-sided rounds.
How is it not an ATG? You have a fight featuring one legend, a definitive all time HW great and one possible future ATG HW. For the world titles in an open air stadium with 90k people. The actual fight has virtually no clinching (how rare is that in a HW fight?), both men down and up, huge shots and one of the hardest uppercuts of all time. At round 11, you have both men up from KDs earlier in the fight and on points it could go any way - again how often do you see this? And then Joshua ends the fight in scintillating and decisive fashion. Both men embrace at the bell. You are a cancer to boxing if you can't see that this is an ATG. Probably just anti-Joshua twats who can't handle the fact that Joshu won. I also tipped Wlad by KO. I have always felt Joshua was sporting a glass chin. I can accept that I was wrong. Some people just can't cope with the fact that Joshu won so will **** on the fight. The only thing that took away from the occasion was the fact that Fury had beaten Wlad in his last fight.
Could have THE greatest fight of all time but someone will bring up a older fight in rose tinted glasses ans say its not as good as this. In 20-30 years time we'll have a more 'solid' view of this fight. I suspect it will be up where with the big fight nights.
