Was Juanma's power diminished because he couldn't wrap his hands the same way Trinidad was busted for? Papa Trinidad said that the way he wrapped Trinidad's hands helped with the power. Bouie Fischer agreed. Juanma's camp admitted to wrapping them in Trinidad's unique way, but the commission made him re-wrap them before the Rogers Mtagwa fight accorind to "el vocero". But like Trinidad, when they weren't allowed to wrap them the way they were accustomed too, it seemed as if the power had diminished. Rogers Mtagwa is a journey man who has been KO twice and has been floored multiple times in his career, but the power hitting you Juanma wasn't ale to put him away, even though he hit him with everything + the kitchen sink. Could it have something to do with him being unable to wrap his hands like he normally does?
lol, can we stop with all of this. I don't care how much power you have, if your fighting a guy who has a chin and is throwing back at you, you aren't going to win the fight on power alone- period. Nothing to do with wraps, everything to do with him not boxing smart.
Many fights have been won on power alone. Rogers Mtagwa had been KO twice and floored on several occasions. But all of a sudden Juanma's unique way of wrapping his hands ala Trinidad is exposed and he is not permitted to do so and he can't KO a knockable guy???? Juanma is supposed to be a harder puncher than Orlando Salido is he not?
Fernando Vargas thought that exact same thing. Someone in Trinidad's own camp literally warned Vargas about Trinidad's wraps before their fight. Vargas claimed he ignored it and laughed it off because he thought it didn't make any sense. In the end, he ended up getting ruined as a fighter. Margarito didn't even have full plaster bricks in his gloves, just a few pads that get firm but remain flexible, and look at the damage those caused to Cotto. But it looks like Boxing is finally starting to crack down on these guys, and rightfully so.
The first poster pointed out that Mtagwa had been KO'd twice previously. Yes those where a number of years ago. It certainly could be argued that the change in wrap did play a part in Juan's power drain. It isn't like he wasn't connecting with flush shots. I only caught the later rounds and Juan had to connect with 50 or more flush shots that didn't have much effect.
I doubt thats what was. Sometimes it takes more then power to finish some one off. You have to set them up for it. PW didnt ko Quintana in there first fight yet hit him an awful lot. But in the remtach he stopped him with ease. Dont assume all power punchers can stop all there opponents just cause they were stopped before hand. Gatti couldnt stop Ivan Robinson in 24 rounds dispite being a power puncher yet some guy named Michael Stewart who's power is medicore stopped him in 8 rounds. There are plenty of cases like that in boxing where guys went the distance with heavy hitters yet got stopped by guys who dont hit as hard.
Tito didn't lose to BHOP because of handswrap. He lost for the same reason DLH did. They never belong to that division. Bhop was just too big.
BHop would beat Tito regardless. That's just a bad style matchup for Tito. Hopkins took away that left hook and Tito became lost. Size is not what lost Tito that fight.
Ok fellows. There are a few things that some so called fight fans don't pay attention to. First of all the wrap deal is not the big issue. Mtagwa was in the biggest fight of his career. Has it ever occured to anyone that he may have trained harder than any other fight in his career. Secondly, Lopez is out growing the division. Did anyone see the weigh-in pics. The man looked drained and we know what that can do to stamina(power). {example Cotto 140 made the move to 147}. Mtagwa is naturally a bigger fighter who has fought at 126. With him being shorter it may have been a little easier to make the weight. I'm not a betting man, but I would be willing to bet that Mtagwa was more determined to win than Lopez. Third was the pressure of putting on a great display of power being his first trip to the Garden and out-doing a potential opponent in Gamboa. Not to mention Gamboa did have the easiest of opponents out of the two. These are not excuses for JuanMa because there are no need for excuses with a win. Just some things to take into consideration.
