so, i recently watched a couple of fights with julio cesar chavez against rocky lockridge and roger mayweather (the rematch). close, competitive and entertaining fights. but what i noticed was that in scoring the rounds, i gave lockridge a slight edge over chavez...and mayweather was actually winning the rematch before quitting on his stool before the 11th round. in both cases, guys were able to outbox chavez, land effective combos that hurt him and backed him up. then i remembered how meldrick taylor had completely dominated the first chavez fight before richard steele showed his ass. and moreso, how sweetpea whitaker had taken chavez to school.

chavez threw a lotta punches and applied a lotta pressure. but he wasn't a heavy puncher and he lacked a lotta fundamentals. and second tier guys gave him a lotta trouble.

I know chavez sr is a big mexican boxing hero and all that, but IMO, chavez sr was one of the most overrated fighters of all time.

    any thoughts?

Pretty overrated. His 2 biggest fights in his prime, Taylor and Pea, results are results but if those 2 turned out to be losses because lets face it he was 3 seconds away from a loss, history would look at his career a lot more differently.

That wasn't his prime, not even really close for Whitaker. Taylor may have been the tail end of it, Whitaker certainly not and certainly not at welter. He didn't carry welter well. He was prime in the Rosario fight back in 87 at lightweight... and those abilities hung on or a couple, at most a few, years.

    No, he is not overrated.

 Funny, Manny Steward, one of the greatest trainers, has been interviewed and gone on record to say he was supposed to be training Chavez he learned more training techniques the other way around. He even went on to say Chavez could fight on the outside, but everyone else was too fast so he never did it.

Chavez still has the most championship fights and victories of any champion in history.

Very overrated fighter, due to his 88-0 records at some point.

Some people have him inside top 15

His speed is far from great. His power is not very explosive either. He has big heart though. But heart can only take him so much.

So many guys from 135 to 147 who would beat him H2H.
