Was Kalambay's performance against McCallum the best boxing performance ever?

I think Leonard was seen as a bigger puncher in 1991 after Lalonde since he knocked out Lalonde who was bigger. But to be honest, I remember the flurry of punches which knocked down Lalonde and he missed with all the punches until he hit Donny on the break. People thought Ray had power when he really didn't at the time. He was being overrated after Hagler, although his heart kept him in the fights. Hearns should have won that decision over Ray in 1989. Tommy outfought him and out experienced him.

Felt like watching it today. I'd seen it years ago in **** quality. Johnny Tapia vs Nana Konadu. Tapia was like Willie Pep in this fight. Won every single round, including the 11th despite the totally bogus knockdown call. Beautiful performance. Damn near perfect. And as the smaller man moving up in weight.

The judges scorecards were ****ing criminal.

In retrospect that fight was a bit of a last great performance thing from Tapia.

He was unfocused against the quite nondescript Ayala shortly after and looked a shell at feather.

    Konadu was done though:yep

Yeah, Konadu had seen better days. Definitely not as sharp as he once was. The commentary would've had you believe he was still at his best, as if he just wasn't trying. Got a laugh out of one point during the match where they said Konadu had never been down in a fight. Describing him as a left hooker and uppercut specialist, etc. I don't think they were too clued up on him outside of his reputation.

It was pretty lame of Konadu to throw his hands up in victory at the end and then walk away disgusted with the decision, though.

Tapia was a boss. Great hook. It was rare that he stayed focused in a fight

Konadu was faded but I agree, Pep-esque from Tapia in an arguable 120-108. Sublime.

I saw Locche vs Cervantes I a few months ago. It's on film and it's spectacular. Cervantes maybe lands three or four solid blows the entire fight. Check it out. It's on youtube.

Let me guess, and he still gets stopped due to one of those three of four shots right?

Sure you're not talking about fight no.2?

The more I watch it the more impressed I am and the more middleweights I imagine losing to sumbu.

He's number 8 on my latest mw list. A special fighter.

his last fight before Norris came at the end of 1989 while the fight w Norris came at the beginning of 1991. shouldnt be a problem for him considering the comeback against hagler. what was that, five years?

and was much LIGHTER than at 160 in the Hagler fight and much FASTER than at 168 where he was carrying all that added weight against Lalonde

as for the knockdowns, ray was always getting knocked down or hurt. We saw this in the Geraldo fight. I called him "spaghetti legs Leonard" then and the name always seemed to stick since. "Spaghetti legs" showed up again the first Duran fight and trembled just a little courtesy of a couple Bruce Finch slaps, and then reached full bloom in the Howard fight, causing a prompt second retirement

yeah, too bad about that fight, huh? Leonard's legs would never allow Sugar to get past Norris. To quick, too slick, and defensively, too good.

The strategy used by the Norris camp was a brilliant one. Leonard couldnt hit Norris and couldnt AVOID getting hit by him either! Sugar had never faced opposition like Norris. Norris MADE Sugar fight his fight. In other words, he BOXED Sugar. In doing so, he MADE Sugar pursue him, not like all the others who just walked straight towards him Dave Green style, Don Lalonde style. Those guys had no finesse, no sophistication, no plan, no speed, no intelligence, and very little athleticsm the way Norris had. not to mention no defense

so u have to put Terry's conquerization of Leonard up there with Kalambay's win over McCallum, Hagler's win over Sibson, jones' win over Pazienza & Toney, and of course, Nunn's win over Kalambay
