Was Kambosos-Lopez the second-best Lightweight Title fight this century?

I would probably rate Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo 1 as the top lightweight title fight this century, in terms of pure action. That will always be hard to beat. But it was also a matchup of champions. The crowd was split evenly.

Kambosos-Lopez was basically great from beginning to end. While there may have been a few rounds with little action, it had intagibles like all the belts (and the Ring title) were on the line. It featured the 'hopeless underdog' fighting on the road in front of a hostile crowd. And George not only silenced them with the early knockdown, he basically won many of them over by the end. When Lopez announced postfight that he won, many booed him.

And they both showed the scars of battle. This wasn't a 'boxing' match where two guys look virtually unmarked afterward. Both were badly beaten up.

Great fight. I totally enjoyed it. I can't think any lightweight title fight that was better this century, except Corrales-Castillo 1.

What a wonderful way to wrap up the year.

Chico-JLC feels like a lifetime ago. Indeed, falls nearer to Whitaker vs. Nelson than Kambosos vs. López on the overall timeline.

    But yeah, I'd agree.

For me this fight will stand the test of time. This feels like a rocky story. Lopez made an ass of himself big time. I had this fight all wrong. dont get me wrong I wanted George to win. But, I felt he'd get picked apart. then the bell starts and I was asking "why is the 10-1 favourite fighting like this?? he's over confident. then he goes down and I was like "see!!" I still thought Lopez would get sharper and when George went down I thought it was the beggining of the end. and then Kambosos won the last 2 rounds wide. If Lopez got the nod this would be the biggest robbery ever and a black eye on the integrity of the sport. I'll give the the 114-113 card a pass I assume they ****ed up round 1 and made it 10-9? I want to see the score cards.

i dont know if this is the fight of the year, but this is the feel good story of the last few years. This will stand the test of time. this is a rocky moment. this is australias moment. this is a great moment for the Commonwealth. this is a great story for boxing.

after 3 split decision in back yards. Hearn needs to sign George and take the haney fight to australia where it sells out a cricket field.

Marquez vs Diaz 1 is the second best lightweight fight of the century imo.

Ay, that was pretty good - but was an "interim" belt. Not sure we're counting that?

Definitely not IMO. Marquez-Diaz was a far better fight. You have a bunch of Katsidis fights; Linares-Mitchell; Hatakeyama-Sakamoto; and also Mayweather-Burton.

I think all of these were better fights.
