Was Kambosos-Lopez the second-best Lightweight Title fight this century?

Well, I recall the most punches thrown and landed in a welterweight fight at one time (not sure if it's still the case) involved Tyrone Trice and Kevin Pompey, but that didn't mean it was necessarily dramatic. It was an ESPN fight. Close. Good. The ESPN announcers thought it was amazing because they usually had to televise mismatches. But it was what it was.

And which one of those you mentioned involved a 13-1 underdog who won all the world titles on the road against an undefeated pound-for-pound defending champ?

Like I said earlier, the fight Saturday night had a ton of intagibles most of the others didn't, on top of being an all-time great World Lightweight Title fight.

Not quite sure why people are trying to diminish what we saw. It was pretty epic.

Was that the biggest upset in Lightweight Title history? I haven't heard anyone say. If not, there weren't many that were longer odds.

Surprised no one mentioned Spadafora vs Dorin. That was a very good fight at 135 but as far as this century, Chico vs Castillo is the tops.

I liked Linares-Mitchell a lot, but it didn't resonate with me like Kambosos-Lopez did. Ending came off as being a bit anticlimactic and the action, while fast paced didn't hold my attention like last night's fight did. Different strokes, and all that.

Good shout. That was a lot of fun, although a bit lopsided to supersede last night's fight, imo.

In my humble opinion the Katsidis vs Cassamayor fight was better. 3 knock downs in the first round, all action fight with Katsidis coming back only to be knocked out late by a crazy counter. Crazy fight, blood everywhere.

That would've been a good one to see the first time out.

    That's awesome.

The first card I went to was in Minnesota. Saw Will Grigsby defend his title. Akinwande, Larry Donald, Randall Bailey, Byron Mitchell all fought. I got addicted for a while. Ended up going to fights all over the country. So much fun.

Kinda low budget for the first show, though. The corner of the ring caved in before one of the fights and they asked people in the audience if they could borrow car jacks to prop it up.

Why do people insist on placing historical significance on decent fights? I quickly became a fan of George and will be rooting for him in his future fights. Extremely likeable hard working guy who makes the most of his skills and stepped up in his biggest fight against his biggest, toughest opponent. I honestly think Teo overlooked him and regard this fight as a cherry pick gone wrong (like Wilder choosing Fury in the first fight). God bless Kambosos for proving so many people wrong including myself. I’ll be a fan of that guy even if he loses his next fight. Guys like Kambosos are good for boxing.

That was an entertaining fight for sure. Lopez looked rusty and far from sharp. Kambosos fought bravely and was pretty disciplined, sticking with the game plan. He’s not a historic great but that’s not a pre requisite for me. He has a lot of heart and I hope he defends the belts successfully. Whatever happens, no one can take away what he achieved yesterday.

Well, most longshot underdogs don't upset undefeated pound-for-pound unified champs on the champion's home turf. It was a massive upset.

If you can any bigger upsets than 13-1 in Lightweight title fight history, please feel free. I'd like to know. Because I can't think of one.

So many all but dismissed this fight going in ... and many simply didn't watch it because they didn't expect much ... that it seems some are giving it short shrift.

Those who talked up Lopez for years want to forget it. The people who are Loma fans seem to want to just bash Lopez. Kambosos had so few fans in comparison it's like people have gone silent or are focusing on the wrong things.

It was a great fight. And a historic win.

Also, you don't see many WORLD Lightweight title fights where both guys go down, both are beaten to bloody pulps, the underdog wins over the crowd and gets the decision in the pound-for-pound champ's hometown.

Also, any time the reigning undefeated WORLD LIghtweight champion loses his title in the ring, it's historic. It's not like that happens all the time these days. (Mayweather vacated. Corrales lost it on the scales. Marquez vacated. Crawford vacated. And it's not like they all beat the reigning unified World Champ to earn recognition, to begin with.)

And this wasn't a "vacant interim WBF SUPER nothingweight" title.

It was one of the original weight divisions. For the World title and all the belts. And it was a great fight featuring two undefeated fighters in their prime with multiple knockdowns and the big underdog knocking off the World Champ.

So it is very significant. Historic, even.

Just trying to open the eyes of some who seem peculiarly if not overly dismissive of a great historic win.

    It had everything.

It was Lopez’s first title defense as unified champ. I think the odds were slanted because most people were not familiar with Kambosos. The long lay-off and multiple rescheduled dates also factored into the equation. I loved the fight but didn’t feel it was historically significant. Lopez was a weight bully who beat a one armed Loma to get the belts. He wasn’t Marvin Hagler with a string of successful title defenses. Great fight, upset winner, but far from historic by any definition. I think calling it historic cheapens the value of true historic fights.

Weight bully. One-armed Loma. Blah Blah.

Nobody's talking about Hagler or Loma.

And what was "slanted" was the reaction after the fight ... because most fans here didn't know or didn't care going in about the huge underdog who ended up winning.

When the WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT Title is won and lost in the ring it's historic.

When a 13-1 underdog beats a pound-for-pound World Lightweight champ IN THE RING, in a blood and guts brawl at times, a boxing match at others, and both guys have to get off the floor and gut it out to go the distance, it's SPECIAL.

They both left pieces of themselves in the ring that night ... because they were fighting for EVERYTHING.

What we saw Saturday was special.

Some of you are giving this short shrift because of all the Lopez-Loma baggage. That fight was a snoozer compared this ... and people have ranted about it for a year.

Appreciate a great, historic fight. One of the very best World Lightweight Title fights this century.

    That's all.
