"The Gifted One" was pure class, but as you say ill disciplined, ill prepared at times and with a liking for wine, women and drugs. Until recently Kirkland was living the life of a vagrant alcoholic....sad end to a great talent

Hardly any footage of him on youtube but here's a Colin Jones interview...Laing really was a great fighter but only ever proved it when he felt like it.

Awkward, quick-handed boxer, but had little power and was somewhat fragile. I seem to recall he had a couple of fights (with Colin Jones??) in which he was doing well until late, and then got KO'd suddenly out of the blue.

Classic case of a great talent gone to waste,of course Colin Jones was another excellent fighter.

Laing was very good he just wasnt that interested in boxing. You could always be sure of entertainment when he did fight though. Can anyone else remember a fight in Italy where the rounds where lasting 4 mins or more to try and tire him out,im sure that was Laing but cant remember who the Italian was.

    Super-talented, couldn't be bothered.

Kinda' like an old, British Zab Judah in a way.

There was a doc a couple of years back. Laing is in a bad way now I think, living in a council flat and an alkie, I'm not certain that's true, just from what I've read.

love the comparison to zab judah never been more truth to a comparison ..the man was flashy ..awesome .. skills out the ass! he'd box the **** out of you when he was on ...but as i was told once cocain and the dance floor was this guys method of training .. couldn't be asked to put in any time in the gym .. talented though is the only word to describe him ..

And how Laing took some of those punches I'll never though. Vulnerable, but not china chinned.

Jones, for my money, one of the top 5 punchers P4P in British history. One thing this thread does is reming us how underrated Jones is, sure he never won anything major, but tough as Hell (only stopped once, on cuts to Donald Curry) he took Milton McCory the distance twice, and even got a Draw in the first fight!

    No nowhere near it.

he was talented, but fought with his weak chin up in the air and had defense at all.

he also lost almostevery single meaningful fight mickey duff ever got for him.
