watching the fight over again you can see a cornerman cleaning the floor underneath the corner and pascal stepping on the towel, whether or not the subsequent stumble was him slipping on more water or not is never visible on the replay because for some reason the camera does not catch that part. i'm sure pascal would have been knocked down soon after that big right by kovalev. any kind of comeback by pascal would not have won him the fight by points and he didn't have the power to ko kovalev so it is what it is. all i'm sayin is kovalev will have problems w a power puncher if he lets himself get hit as much as he did against pascal.
In Pascal case, he said he came back already, when really hurt. He did manage to win rounds after he got brutalized by Kovalev. He said Gatty would have never gave boxing some of its most entertaining fight if he had been stop like Pascal have been when Gatty was in trouble. Personnaly, I think it would have been worst for him. But I guess he has a point. Basicaly, it is was 0.1% to 99,9% odds (since their was only one Gatty) but their was a chance would of come back!
If the fighter is defenseless, not returning punches, absorbing unusual punishment and untimely deemed defenseless by the Ref....it merits a stoppage to protect the boxer from himself.... Pabon stop the fight judiciously and fair!
The camera work certainly confused the actions a lot. At first it wasn't even clear what Kovalev was pointing at, it seemed like he was complaining to the ref. Is there a clear good angle focusing only on Pascal? I haven't seen it yet, if there was it would be clearer how much drunk he was.
pascal had his hands up and was steady on his feet at the time of the stoppage....it was clearly a bad stoppage which is why the crowd and the fighter himself was disgusted at the ref.... first thing that came across my mind was that they were trying to save kovalev from a rough second half of the fight where he would have been tested ...they didn't want to risk him taking damage that would hurt his conditioning for future fights.
Finally saw it Pacscal was rocked back and stumbled to the corner when the ref checked Kovalev after the slip Pascal stood immobile and took two right hands one of which bent him at the waist I think it could have gone on a few more seconds maybe let Kovalev land a punch that wobbles him a little more the referees decision didn't rob Pascal of a win thoughm that fight was seconds from being stopped anyway
It was a great stoppage. Most referees will tell you that their first priority is the safety of the fighters. Pascal had taken a beating and was in very bad shape. Kovalev had just belabored him with about four of five very hard flush lefts and rights which sent him reeling into the ropes in the corner (which should've been ruled a KD) and then when he tried to walk over to the other corner after Kovalev slipped he wobbled forward on unsteady legs as he was making his way over there, which both the referee and Kovalev saw. Pascal just stood there like a deer caught in the headlights and absorbed two more very hard flush rights when the referee waved it back on. Go watch Kovalev vs White, Campillo etc. and pay close attention to the people seated ringside in the first couple of rows. You can see them wincing and covering their faces as Kovalev's punches land. He's a savage puncher and I've heard numerous people who've attended his fights say that the even the sound of his punches is different. The guy killed one of his opponents for goodness sake. Put yourself in the referee's position. If Pascal got badly hurt everyone would be criticizing him for not stopping it sooner.
Some good slow motion footage from the fight in the first vid. The straight left Kovalev clocks Pascal with at the 0:20 mark nearly takes his head off and the right and the two jolting lefts at the 1:02 mark and the especially the right we see following them are nasty. [YT]PqFS7P1tZLg[/YT] That nasty left at the end of the 7th which hurt Pascal (0:17) and then that vicious series of left and rights straight after followed by the final two rights in the corner. Great stoppage. [YT]vpX9C-2CDKE[/YT]
