america were desperate for another exciting tysonesque fighter so totally hyped to ****,,,but then he did look good against reid n vanderpool, but joe was far too good and exposed a fraud...Interesting to see how good taylor measures up
Lacy was overrated, AND there really isn't a better example of a fighter getting shot off a couple of fights. He was mentally broken down by the Calzaghe fight, then physically broken down in his next fight against Tsypko, and honestly, he hasn't even been close to being the same since.
I predicted Calzaghe to win on points at the time. After watching Lacy-Manfredo and a bit more of Lacy on dvd from before the Calzaghe fight, I now see that he was highly overrated.
But was he overrated BEFORE, or AFTER his fight with Joe??...he has gone down hill atleast mentally since:-(
I don't understand why everyone makes out like Lacy v Calzaghe was some kind of Pavlik v Lockett style mismatch where Lacy was overwhelmingly favoured by everyone outside of Wales. It wasn't the case at all in reality. Lacy was an inexperienced big puncher, Calzaghe was a skilled established champion. Lacy was a slight favourite with the US press, Calzaghe the same with the UK press. I don't understand why so many people fail to realize this.
How much of him have you actually seen pre-Calzaghe? I hadn't seen that much at the time, but have seen of a few of those fights now.
Lacy was an Overwhelming favourite(almost unanimous) with the American Press and a slight favourite with the British press.
Lacy was not a favourite with most of the British press that I read. American journalists favouring an American fighter?! Well I never. How bizarre.
He was always limited. That surely cannot be denied. Kessler would have then and would now have Lacy for breakfast. As I fully expect Jermain Taylor to.
