Well you can't be half hearted when pitted against a brick wall.

You're right. I feel like I owe you a favor.. Boxrec.com has an awesome chat forum with some really nice people and some great boxing discussions. I would hang there myself but I think it's too advanced for me. You should probably go there. It's much better than this place and I think you'd be happier..

He probably wasn't too far past it. Lewis, by all accounts, lived a very clean life and didn't abuse himself with drugs and alcohol and hard partying like many champions do, so I think it possible that he was still close to being prime. Lewis also didn't take much abuse in his career; his two knockout losses were single-shots that he took and didn't recover from; he never really took a bad beating. But was he in the best of shape? No. He showed up at a career-high weight and didn't seem to be as well trained as he had been for some of his previous fights.

37 isn't all that old physically, especially nowadays. In Joe Louis' time and even in Ali's time, 37 was considered old for an athlete. But things have changed. Even some of the best marathon runners are athletes in their 30s.

Agreed. Lewis was performing very well in the previous fights leading up to this fight with Vitali. I think Lewis struggled against Klitschko because he was undertrained and underprepared, and also because he was facing a very skilled, big heavyweight in Klitschko.

He didn't look so great against Tony Tucker, either. Had an older Lewis fought that same Tucker and performed the same, many here would be saying Lewis' lackadaisical performance was due to being past it. But since it happened when he was younger, I guess the reason will be because he was still green.

He never fought a Vitali when he was younger (and definitely not on short notice). He was also never 255+ pounds when he was younger, either.

But against Bruno, he took a fair amount of punishment and lost several rounds (from what I remember).

Oh, come on now. You make it sound like Lewis was just laying against the ropes like Ali did against Holmes just taking punishment; like he was not punching or moving or showing any skills at all. Vitali was a very good fighter, very durable, big, and strong. And Lewis didn't help himself by showing up to fight in less-than-stellar shape. But it was not a one-sided beatdown like Ali/Holmes or Ali/Cobb. Lewis took a lot of punches but gave a lot of punches back. He was punching well and showing skill, but he was slow and lethargic.

I think you should read a bit more information on the guy. The Maloney family were very partial to a drink, and indeed ran pubs in South East London ( McVey will probably know more about this than I do ) but Frank freely admitted he was " drank under the table " a few times by Lennox who was partial to both Brandy and Champagne.

There is a big difference between living a " private " life, and a life of abstinence, like say Hopkins.
