Why did Hearns come in 145?

Would he have been at 155 lbs at fight-time under todays' weigh-in rules and not gassed out late in the fight?

Yeah... Back in '81 they still did day-of-the-fight weigh-ins...... The 145 form Hearns was too light, and it haunted him after round 10... SRL was finely tuned, but bothered by Hearns' height, reach and speed.... Ray boxed Tommy big time for the first 5 rds...

Wouldn't have fixed his chin, which always proved fragile, and wouldn't have protected him from body shots.

Tommy did gas, but he also looked like falling over every time he got hit clean.

Read somewhere that Hearns already had repeated problems making weight by the time he fought Leonard.

Maybe someone knows more about that?

Manny Steward has been accused before of starving his 6' plus bean-pole fighters before.... Manny Steward loves to have a skyscrapper looking like he has AIDS..... Hearns should've been 154 with ease by Sept. 1981, but the economic demand FORCED team Hearns to stay down at 147, etc.....

Michael Moorer under Steward's wing at 175 lived off a hard-boiled egg and banana with orange juice for breakfast; lunch was nothing and dinner was a chicken breast on a bed of white rice with a cooked veggie along with a diet soda..... Moorer got tired of that diet by 1990.....

Yes, the 'gassing out' had nothing to do with Leonard at all.

If Hearns had "trouble making weight", how come he came in at 145 ?

Usually when welters are struggling with the weight, they manage no less than 146 3/4 ....

... and I'm just stating the obvious.

Well, he was probably only on that diet briefly before fights, and because he'd let himself get fat between fights.
Moorer looked good and muscular at 175 pounds, and a bit fat at heavy.

Steward said he was worried Hearns over-trained on ESPN Ringside. Remember seeing it.

Hearns was a **** hair over 147 the eve of the fight in '81... Steward sent Hearns to a sauna in which Hearns stayed too long and and went on and weighed 145 on the gottdamn official scale...... That was an "Oops" on the part of team Hearns.... Hearns immediately hit the Gatorade hardcore once weighing in at 145....

I remember when people heard Hearns was 145 there was a gasp in the audience. They were surprised he came in 145. They might have expected 146 1/2, but not 145.

So, he was doomed from a sauna for the Leonard fight, and doomed from a leg massage for the Hagler fight !

Why would he do that? You lose 2lbs in water over night anyway, so he can't have been only 147 and a bit on the eve of the fight

Lewis and Klitschko don't have to make weight.
I think Steward would accept that they shouldn't fight as cruisers.

I'm not sure what MR BILL says it right though. Hearns was really quite naturally skinny, he had no legs and a narrow rib cage, pretty wide in the shoulders though so he could hold more weight and move up.
I think he was still quite natural at welterweight in 1981 though. Just a freakish build, that's all. I mean, people say he wasn't strong at middleweight for years, so I'm guessing he's still a welter at 22/23 years of age. He maybe got relatively weaker as he moved up.

Steward does seem to like working with tall rangey fighters though, so maybe he did keep a few down in unnatural weight classes.
