Was Lloyd Honeyghan’s victory over Donald Curry at welterweight a flash in the pan victory?

Leonard when he was younger was a bit of a jerk to be honest with you.
He always seemed to be jealous of anyone who got any praise if it wasn't him.
He tried his hand at management and he was a horrible manager.
He had Quincy Taylor and Robert Byrd. Two outstanding prospects.
His management especially with Quincy was horrible.
Think he had a sponsorship with Coors light.
But when he was younger he was not a very nice person at all.
He came to our gym like twice and kicked everyone out because he decided he wanted to workout at that gym. Didn't matter that people were in the middle of sparring. Or the heavy bag. Everyone had to leave.
Even the pro boxers.
Alot of people local HATED him especially the area pro boxers.

Put up a decent effort and probably should have won but I can honestly say, he was NOTHING like what I saw when Lloyd had his chance, and wound up destroying The MAN himself with those long range combnations to the head. Colin didn't have that ability and that is why Lloyd succeeded where Colin came up short

Curry was a very good fighter, but he tended to fall short against the more distinguished best of the best competition

Milton McCrory:BEST JAB
Colin Jones: He had a good jab. I was looking for the left hook, my whole thought when I fought him was not to get hit by his left hook. Whenever he threw a jab, he hit me. He broke my nose with his jab because I was looking for that hook. It was a solid jab.

McCrory: BEST DEFENSE
Jones: He was the hardest fight I ever had. He had a very good defense, he had that peek-a-boo style and would cover up.

McCrory: STRONGEST
Jones: I’m going to go with Colin Jones. He was shorter than me and he fought aggressive and he was strong. The bodyshots… everything hurt. We went 24 rounds.

And he also dropped Santana who was pretty tough.
Curry because you more then likely don't know beat up Davey Moore in the amateur ranks and Davey could flat out CRACK.
Honeyghan was a soild pro who seized the moment like he should have and wasn't intimidated and all credit to him for that because that is a big accomplishment. He definitely deserves credit for the win. He's not responsible for what Curry does.
But lets get one thing straight: at his best Curry cleans Honeyghans clock.
Hence why Llyodd turned down $350,000 rematch at jr.middleweight.

Quick dispatches of washed up James Green did nothing to change my mind

Lloyd was actually the first REAL challenger and Curry was just not up to it
I really enjoyed the way Lloyd cut loose on the typical control conscience Curry, landing punches to the head with a sickening THUD. These blows tore him up and even if not for the butt/cut, Curry would not have lasted much longer

although Curry was the skillful technician, Floyd was by far the more physical.

power and aggression trumps skill

simply put, Lloyd was too much fighter for Curry

McCrory: BEST PUNCHER
Jones: Mike McCallum couldn’t punch hard… I was just tired. I took a 15-rounder at two weeks [notice] and went 10 rounds. Donald was a good puncher, he could punch. I’d stick with Colin Jones. He hurt me around the fifth round with a bodyshot.

Consider, Curry lost to McCallum only months later - by KNOCKOUT. weight NOT an issue

then the Norris fight,, too OLD now?

although he looked great decimating sub par opposition, we saw how Curry folded every time when pitted against top level fighters, who forced him out of his comfort zone, taking him to his limits and beyond; similar to how Jerry Quarry fared when faced with the top heavyweights

McCrory: BEST OVERALL
McCallum: It’s between Donald Curry, Mike McCallum and Colin Jones. It’s hard because styles make fights, it’s hard to say. I’d go with Mike McCallum; he was good at everything.

Too many distraction s in his life etc. But 86 to 88, he was the real deal.
His off night to Vaca was put right and showed when his head was on, how good he could be.

I thought he seemed a little too casual going into the Starling fight, and looked visibly shocked at what was coming back him in the ring that night. He was slipping after the Hatcher fight.

FYI you've linked the wrong fight. That fight was for the USBA title and their WBA/IBF title (rematch) fight was over 15.

I remember the fight at the time. Great effort by a Starling in top flight but while the fight was reasonably close Starling in no way won and he acknowledged that. Curry was the better man for sure. He implied Curry was too strong for the division and should move up as Curry rag dolled him on occasions and bossed him. An in form Starling was actually one helluva boxer and IMO the second best then best welter (when Curry lost) for many years.

The Starling rematch win was possibly Donald's most compelling effort among many in that short period when he was at the top of his game.

Starling agreed with that sentiment in his article in the ring, the best I`ve ever faced: "Curry did nothing great, but everything good, he had great eyes, he could see openings.

Yes. I'd say he did some things better than good but his overall indication that Curry had no weaknesses is solid.

That was a fight I picked him to win, Starling. Was gutted he lost..
Maybe Starling always had his number tho.

I had Curry way ahead in the rematch but neither man was what you'd call "out-a-sight!"
