Was Lloyd Honeyghan’s victory over Donald Curry at welterweight a flash in the pan victory?

Didn't he just. I remember Honeys face swollen up, he really did a number on him.

Lloyd gassed from high volume punching against Starling`s high guard.

Lloyd just put it on him and Curry being drained and dry to the core had nothing to dig down for. Classic fight, almost Rocky Balboa esq where a huge underdog has the fight of his life against a less than motivated champion.

Rocky didn`t have Honeyghan`s speed and skill and neither did Wepner, it was simply a solid contender who was very quick and could punch beating an overrated P4P top 10 fighter.

To me Lloyd Honeyghan was a very talented welterweight, very intense fighter who happened to catch Donald Curry at a very vulnerable time. Curry was starting to have weight issues at 147 lbs, taking a few non title fights at 154lbs. Donald was starting to look past his training regiment, looking more towards getting a title shot at Marvelous Marvin Hagler, a big money fight as Curry was the undisputed World Welterweight Champion on the night of Sept 27 1986, across the ring from him was a very hungry Lloyd Honeyghan, looking to make a name for himself with a victory plus the tile. Honeyghan was like a gunfighter in a Western, looking to make a name by taking out a faster gun with a big reputation. Once Lloyd won the belt that night, all the desire appeared to be gauging on empty.

Because he had moved up in weight when he lost his titles. Remember this is the same guy who fought Vinny latter on at what Middleweight?
They made the offer to Honeyghan AFTER he was no longer a champion.
I actually thought he would have taken it as it was 350k. But he turned it down.

Lloyd was finshed when he moved up to light middle, he was a natural welter, he was awful v Vinny so what if he fought at 160, he was awful?

It serves them right. I'm talking about the boxing press.

so long as he was faced with suspect opponents in a very weak division, the press made a God out of him. With each new defense, just be fighting so so competition, they would build him up even more, as far as their imagination could take him

Once their man was exposed, they began making excuses for him but the fact is, it was only months later, he tried out a higher weight class vs Boss man McCallum and couldnt cut it there either

Curry FAILED in every big match he'd ever been in proving to me that he was the ruler of a weak division and the beneficiary of media built up. He had many chances to prove the Honeyghan fight was a fluke but by 1991, the REAL opposition had disproved the myth of Don Curry
