Was Lloyd Honeyghan’s victory over Donald Curry at welterweight a flash in the pan victory?

Well he was behind I suppose but if Vaca hadn`t got cut we don`t know how the nex four rounds would have gone, Without the point deduction the fight would have been a draw.

    Indeed. Kronk broke Errol Christie.

"Flash in the pan" is a heck of a way to put it, considering the Lone Star Cobra's stature in the sport at that juncture. Not that a lesser fighter having the number of an elite one is unprecedented in the annals of sport, but the burden of proving that being the case in any individual situation I feel must needs be very high. And most people that have watched his fights and placed them in context of his time I think do have an overall favorable impression of Honeyghan. You can of course argue that he rose above his station in springing the upset, and quite rightly - but it wasn't like he was trash, and he did beat several contenders.

There are concessions about circumstance to be made on Curry's behalf if appraising the victory honestly, but you still have to give Honeyghan more credit and respect for it than reducing it to anything so glib sounding as "flash in the pan".

We don't even have to go there; having a fighter's number and/or being the better man on a particular night but the less great fighter overall (and capable of beating fewer peers or stylistic variants) is a well-documented phenomenon in boxing.

Listen young opinionated one. I knew Errol and Lloyd even better, I used to catch the train home with Lloyd from the gym.
Errol was superb but the utter violence of the Kronk day to day changed him.
Also, he really struggled doing 11 stone 6. His manager, Burt McCarthy, didn't want him to go up to Super Middle as it wasn't a weight recognised in the UK at the time.
It's very easy to call a bloke awful when you've not done it yourself.

    like they say "styles"

Curry has always had problems with bigger, more powerful fighters; Lloyd, McCallum, Nunn, Norris

and was even decked by the Korean challenger and extended to 15

Up until his fight with Lloyd, Curry's opposition had been meek and weak. Just look at his nearest rivals, Marlon starling, Nino La Rocca, Colin Jones, Milton McCrory, Diaz, etc. Not exactly the kind of opposition to inspire fear.

It was just a weak field at the time and the boxing press was so desperate for another Sugar Ray Leonard, that they prematurely gave him the #1 p4p title

    This is an easy one

if you had been following an earlier part of the thread, it was agreed that Lloyd had lost the same form that brought him the championship

so we can conclude that a fighter with the meager credentials of Starling, would probably not emerge victorious over Lloyd of the Curry fight

You dont have to like him but give him credit; Lloyd won overwhelmingly over the same Curry that Starling twice failed to beat

Bait set.......bait swallowed, hook, line, sinker and 3/4 of the rod.

If you had been following the earlier part of the thread you would have seen that Curry had been struggling with the weight and was an emaciated shell of his previous self.

You are allowing excuses for Honeyghan but not Curry.

    Next!
