It was a CLOSE fight, But Louis did the damage and landed the heavyer blows, compare to Farrs light taps and jabs. I gave it to Louis by a few rounds. A few years back, I did do a round by round score for the fight, and Louis had 3 or so rounds lead. It was close, but I dont think the verdict was controverasal.
It was close/tought fight. Louis likely edged it, but I feel Farr exposed Louis as easy to hit and out box. One time Farr visibly stunned Louis. There was no re-match. What bothered me most about this match was the juding. Art Donoavan was the offical and judge in at least 15 Joe Louis fights. To say Donovan and Louis had a relationship based around money is fair. Somehow Donoavan scored the Louis vs Farr fight 13-1-1 for Louis. Unreal. The other judges had it 8-5-2 and 9-6 for Louis. There is no doubt Farr won at least 5 rounds. Maybe 7 or even 8.
Because of the controversal nature there probably should of been a rematch BUT Farr went a losing streak after this fight
.............I've got that one, and no, Louis clealy won. Farr deserves cedit for hanging tough, but Louis was busier and sharper.
Outrageous, Louis had oustanding defensive skills and textbook fundamentals. To say Louis was easy to hit and outbox is a very poor choice of wording. * One thing that happened in this fight many don't know about it is Louis hurt his right hand in the 5th round very badly, and it was useless the rest of the fight. Louis fought Farr with one hand for the last 10 rounds....Louis claimed if he hadnt hurt his hand he would have knocked farr out before the 10th round. This is one of Louis very worst filmed performance and he should be let a get out of jail free card on this one.......
Louis won the fight ,he hurt his right hand early ,he said he would have stopped Farr otherwise, which I think is unlikely Farr told my Dad that Louis just nicked it,but that he was robbed against Braddock.
I have a TV interview with Tommy Farr. He felt it was resonably close, but Louis won without any doubt. Woller
to be fair farr never made a holy fuss about the decision and always said that joe won.i think the fact that someone gave louis 15 hard rounds attracted a lot of sympathy for the loser.
I don't see the controversy. Not to put too much of a point on it, but it's usually the British (understandably, he was 'their' guy) who maintain the decision was controversial.
Most British listened to it on the radio broadcast which had led them to believe Farr had done enough to win. I've only ever seen highlights and looks like Louis had Farr on the end of his jab a fair bit. Highlights of Braddock-Farr looks like Farr was beating him, and I believe that really was an unfair decision.
An unexpectedly close fight from a talented and tough British fighter. The real controversy lies in a few trying to elevate Farr's game performance into a victory. He certainly gave Louis trouble, but not to the point were he may be deemed to have won - While sometimes outmanoeuvred, Louis was the more commanding fighter throughout. Had a rematch of gone ahead, Farr would have been chopped down.
