Mayweather was the reason, the quality of opponents makes it more interesting, besides they thought Hatton was supposed to be the first to give Floyd his first professional lost, man they were so wrong!

 

Mayweather can't sell a fight without a big draw across the ring. Most people tune in to see him loose to their guy, he is definately not the draw, how many PPV has he even been on that were successful, thats right only 2 and you know who he was fighting.

 

So far, DLH highest PPV set was 1.4 buys, they shattered it by 1 million.

Ricky Hatton is supported to the same extent as a premiership football club. This thread is stupid.

 

What are Floyd's numbers usually like without having 2 of the biggest draws in the game to boost his mainstream recognition? Roughly 360k against Gatti and 350k for Judah, that's how much. To put that in perspective, if you combine them, it's less than the English PPV numbers alone for his fight against Hatton. Hatton- Mayweather did roughly 1 million buys, just in England.

I'm not saying Floyd deserves no credit for the huge numbers- but the answer is Hatton as far as being more important in getting the England buys. Like I said: put Hatton against any common opponent you'd theoretically put Mayweather against, all other things equal, and Hatton would outdraw him in the UK. 10 times out of 10.

I don't know why people take it as a knock on Floyd that he can't outdraw one of the most popular fighters in the game in Hatton, in Hatton's own home country. It just ain't so.

 

I'm not even taking it as a knock. Im simply saying they were both the reason why the numbers did so good in the UK. Hatton would outdo him in the UK, but Mayweather would outdo in the US. Im pointing out put them together it made a BIG fight that everyone wanted to see.

Lets say Hatton would do 300,000 buys against Paulie. Well with Mayweather they broke the old record and did about a million.


They both made the fight big because everyone wanted to see Floyd get beat by Hatton.

i knew alot of people who bought the ppv that didn't know who hatton was fighting, all they knew was hatton was fighting so they ordered.

 

mainly hatton fans, it helped that he was fighting the £4£ number one but hatton was the main draw in the UK. DLH-mayweather wasn't even PPV over here.

 

It was both but the fans came mainly for Hatton. Put it this way, PBF-Cotto wouldnt do that many buys in the UK but put Hatton with any big name out there and the right marketing and he would still do huge numbers in the UK.

Its like im a fan of manchester United. I couldnt careless if they were playing Bolton in a friendly but if they were playing Real Madrid in champions cup final you bet id be buying it, thats because im a fan of Man U and supporting their big game (big fight in Hattons case).

Here is my take on this:

Mayweather liked to say that the reason so many Brits went to Vegas was to see him. This is statistically true. Well under half the figure which went over in December went to see Castillo. This is because most knew that Castillo was not a big name and it was fairly obvious that it would be a routine win for Ricky. On a similar note, why pay money for a fight that you know will not be that good and also know will not be talked about at work much the following week (or in the pub with your friends).

Hatton had (I am going to put it in past tense because I think he is starting to **** people off with his Witter ducking and inflated ticket prices) a huge following in the UK but people are sensible with their money. We do not have the PPV culture you guys in America have. We do not want to pay to watch something unless we know we are going to witness something good - maybe something historic.

The way the press built up this fight and the confidence from the Hatton camp, we all bought into the dream that Ricky could win AND that this was definately worth the PPV buy. Add to this the fact that is was billed as UK vs USA it all added to the hype.

In summary, both fighters needed each other to make these numbers. The proof to this will be a comparison with the Rees and assuming he stops being a coward the Witter fight. Even though these will be big domestic fights I doubt the PPV figures in any country will be very high.
