I can guarantee nobody other than hardcore sports fans know who the **** Floyd Mayweather is. How can he be the reason? If he was the reason, he would get serious viewing figures if he was fighting somebody like De La Hoya. But he wouldn't. Hatton would get good figures fighting Ronald McDonald. That is the difference.

The figures for Mayweather were extraordinarily high because of the intense marketing of the fight. Buzzwords like "undefeated" and "p4p best" are what got peoples attention. It could have been absolutely anyone against Hatton, the point is he was promoted as the best

 

Im saying it's both of them. Hatton will never do those numbers in England (he hasn't done past 500,000) and Mayweather will never do it with Hatton.

They combined together to make a big fight. BOTH

 

But to say he is the reason is simplistic, it implies people care about him

It could have been absolutely anybody. If Sky promoted Paulie Malignaggi as the best, and it somehow seemed believable, it would have got similar figures

This fight got high figures by default, because the hero Ricky Hatton, was vying for the status of best fighter on the planet. So of course you can say it's partly due to Mayweather, but that's just common sense, because he's the best at the moment

 

No he hasn't as far as im aware, next highest would be tzuyu msybe done 500000 but i doubt it. To be honest it was a mixture really, i watched the fight with about 20 mates and i was the only one that was more than a casual boxing fan and half that where there had never seen a hatton fight before never mind a mayweather one before.

The reason it did as well as it did was the way the media covered the fight over here, it was massive and this was down to both fighters, hatton the ordinary coucil estate boy done good who is already a big name even to none boxing fans in this country, but the way mayweather atagonised people with the way he was at the promotional tour helped get normal people intrested, as well as the fact he was know as the best in the world and most people that didn't no boxing expected hatton to win, which suited me fine i made a lot of money off people betting on hatton:good

 

It was the fact that Hatton was fighting PBF

it wasnt anything to do with mayweather really, it was what he represented.

most of the people who watched the fight are not huge fans, many hadnt know about mayweather before the fight. they knew amir khan hatton and calzaghe, and had memories of bruno benn and eubank.

but the media did a great job of building mayweather as the "big loud american, who is arrogant. wouldnt you love it if good old ricky shut him up!"

and the brits went for it in a big way.

 

Everone wanted to see Hatton...the reason the numbers were so high was obviously because he was fighting the best p4p in the world.

what is cetain is that hatton can do more ppv in the uk at 4.30 am on a sunday morning than mayweather can do prime time in america.
