The only fights I ever saw him in were the Andrew Golata fight and his early loss to Lennox Lewis. Both were many years ago, but I do remember the Golata match being very entertaining and competitive to some extent. Anyway, Grant was a native Chicagoan who didn't have much of an amatuer career to speak of, but did manage to go undefeated in his first 31 matches. On his way to challenging Lennox Lewis, Grant chalked up wins over Golata, Savarese, Abdin, Gonzalez, Sullivan, Izon, Purity and Butler. Not a great list, but certainly not a bad one by any means. He was also 6'7" and a fairly muscular 250 Lbs. His defense needed polishing, but his offense was certainly pretty solid. Lewis annialated him with no trouble, and frankly it seems to be a forgotten win. Here is some stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emfS1S2SXkI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE8qQJEtIcE
Some of those combos he was throwing at T-Rex Sanders were lethal. The man definately had some tools to work with. His durability and defense were arguably his two biggest problems, though he did come off the canvas and took many big shots from Golata enroute to a victory.
you know what Michael Grant and Lance Whitaker have in common....everything...size and reach but not much else....Grant should have got ko'd by Golota, and every other class fight exposed him...he's rated where he should be IMO.
Not really underated, no. He's seen as a long, hard good puncher who would always fall short at the highest level. Bout right.
i remember the build up to he's fight with lewis and i was thinking maybe this guy is gonna be a major threat to lewis having not seen much of him before hand only Highlights from he's match with Golota. he certainly looked the part and we all know what happen to him when the bell rang . Grant never really done that much after the loss except lose some more
did anyone pick him to beat lewis? ...anybody got any articles or links of the press leading up to the fight?
From one Chicagoan to another Chicagoan...I think Grant was not only NOT underrated. I think he's overrated. He's physically gifted and should have done better than he's done. He's not a top tier heavyweight.
The commentating for the Grant-Lewis match is so biased it's laughable. As Lewis battered Grant around, Foreman said Lewis was making a mistake by not using his jab more
I haven't rewatched the Grant-Golota fight in a while, but iirc, Grant's victory had everything to do with Golota's lack of heart and screwed up head.
Grant was a far better fighter then Lance Whitaker. You can't fault the power of a guy that blew out Corey Sander's in a handful of rounds. Maskaev couldn't even dent Sanders, nor could Golota even though he beat on Corey so badly that Sander's went blind in one eye. The Lennox fight was perhaps the most foul filled Lennox fight I've ever watched. The leaning and holding and hitting was ****ing terrible.
