I was just rewatching Jones vs Ruiz and noticed he was more sluggish than fans have suggested in his display against the painfully slow Ruiz, so I had another look at Tyson v Tucker and his handspeed is close to Roy`s most of the time and may have been quicker! Was Roy slower than Mike at heavy? Do you think Toney would have lasted longer than Jones vs prime Mike at heavy?
Remember when David Tua was supposed to be second coming of Tyson ? I looked and I didn't see the quickness....btw James Toney is another guy who has Underrated handspeed
Did you look at them at the same age? Out of curiosity I’d assume at the same age Roy would be faster...problem is we really only have 1 fight to compare
Toney without question lasts longer than Roy with a prime Tyson, RJJ would likely have been floored by a Tyson jab.
Roy didn’t need to be ultra fast against Ruiz. It was so easy, most people thought that it was boring. Roy was happy to just pot shot him and rack up the points. There were no real combinations thrown. It’s not a good fight to gauge his hand speed, but he obviously only had that one fight at the weight. So Mike does look faster.
You mean if Roy was in his early 20`s and went up to heavyweight he would have retained a lot of speed despite the bulk he was carrying?
More of an age thing. Just curious because Tyson was a lot faster in his younger years as are most guys. Was wondering if you were comparing them at the same age. Because young tyson May certainly have been faster then the Jones we saw although I admittedly haven’t watched that fight in years.
I was talking about Tyson when he fought Tucker compared to Jones in his early 30`s, Jones may have beaten Tyson in the mid 90`s.
I would say that Roy was quicker, but we just didn’t see it in his only fight at the weight. I think the only versions of Mike that Roy could have beaten, were the versions who fought right at the end of his career against Williams and McBride.
