Monzon was rated No.7 in a list of the greatest 50 P4P fighters in the last 50 years by the ring magazine in 1997, Arguello was rated No.8 in the same list, which of these guys should have rated higher than the other, which of them was better P4P in thir respective primes? Ring magazine further info on Monzon: Quality of competition: 9 Bouts v Top 50 fighters: 3 Why he was on the list: Went undefeated for 13 years and 81 bouts; made a division-record 14 successful defenses What he could have done to improve his ranking: Been born 15 years earlier so he could have fought Ray Robinson Arguello info: Quality of competition: 9 Bouts v top 50 fighters: 2 Why he was on the list: He went 19-1 in title fights at 126, 130, and 135 pounds What he could have done to improve his ranking: Made one of those big right hands count v Pryor in Miami
Under “bouts vs top 50 fighters” it has Arguello’s total at 2. Both against Pryor, I’m assuming. Did Olivares somehow miss out on this list? Monzon’s dominance and consistency is what gives him the edge over Arguello’s superior depth. Not that the latter was lacking in either of those departments. He just wasn’t on the mythical level that Monzon was.
Maybe they meant Marcel? Is certainly have him higher than Pryor, although neither top 50. , Is definitely an oversight if you're correct.
Sadly, yes. I say sadly because one was electrifying to watch, and a top-notch human being. The other was a methodical, sometimes dull, psychopath. But Monzon was the better fighter as he had less holes, and more versatility. Monzon has a valid argument as the #2 all time Latin fighter behind Duran. Arguello has a case at top 5, but not top 2.
The Latin thing is a good idea. I'd have Monzon at three, after Duran & Carlos Ortiz. Jofre at four, and if he counts (obviously being black but Hispanic), Gavilan at five.
Yeah, I remember we went through that a few months ago. The only thing everyone could agree on was Duran at 1. 2-5 was different for everyone else, and that's cool. Jofre, Monzon, Arguello, Ortiz, Napoles, Chavez, Gavilan, Sanchez, Rodriguez, ect all have a case for top 5.
I'm not sure this is true. Monzon was dominant, yes true, that doesn't mean he didn't have holes in his boxing style. He didn't fight at a fast pace and was very basic in what he did without being particularly athletic. He was effective but he was very beatable even if no one pulled it off in his reign. Arguello's arsenal and technical ability was simply better. He put his punches together better and was an equal as a ring general. Arguello fought for world championships, fighting all the best across 4 divisions. Monzon fought in one and even his biggest fans don't fancy his chances against Foster.
LOL! In Monzon's case, all things point to him being a chronic woman beater before he became a murderer. I know appearances aren't everything, but I've watched a few Monzon interviews. The guy had soul-less eyes.
